Actually I Was There Alone Manga

Okay, so listen. You know how sometimes you stumble upon a manga that just hits different? Like, it's not your typical shonen action or fluffy shojo romance, but something… else? That's how I felt when I started reading Actually I Was There Alone. And yes, the title is a bit of a mouthful, isn’t it?

Seriously though, this manga is a gem. I saw it recommended online. I can't remember where. Probably in a late-night manga-browsing session. You know, the kind where you tell yourself you'll just look for five minutes and then suddenly it's 3 AM? Yep, that's how it happens. Anyway, the description seemed intriguing, a bit melancholic, and definitely not something I'd usually pick up.

So, what's it about?

Right, the plot! In a nutshell, it follows a dude named Senri. He's not exactly Mr. Popularity. He's kinda quiet, introspective, and spends a lot of time... alone. Shocker, right? (Given the title, I mean!) But here's the thing: he's not just alone. He's got this weird ability, a sort of temporal displacement. Basically, he can sometimes see glimpses, echoes, of people from different times and places who were alone in the same spot.

Think about it: a park bench where lovers once carved their initials is the same park bench where a homeless person slept last night. The shared space, but totally different lives. Senri sees those layers. Pretty cool, huh?

It's not a superpower, though. It's more like... a burden? A poignant reminder of human isolation and the fleeting nature of existence. Deep, right? Don't worry, it's not all doom and gloom. There’s plenty of slice-of-life stuff too.

Each chapter usually revolves around a different location and a different "ghost." A classroom, a train station, a vending machine outside a ramen shop at night, a bridge. Senri encounters the echoes of these past lives, each with their own little story of loneliness, longing, or quiet contemplation. Honestly, it's surprisingly moving.

Why is it so good?

Okay, so why am I raving about it like a crazy person who just discovered sliced bread? Let me break it down for you:

The Atmosphere

First off, the atmosphere is just chef's kiss. The artist, Takemoto Izumi, does an amazing job of capturing this sense of quiet melancholy. The backgrounds are detailed, the characters are expressive (even when they're just standing there looking sad), and the overall tone is just perfect. It feels like a warm, rainy day – comforting but also a little bit sad.

The Stories

Then there are the stories themselves. They're not epic adventures or anything. They're small, intimate vignettes of everyday life. A student struggling with exams, an office worker feeling burnt out, an old woman reminiscing about her late husband. They're relatable, even though you might not have experienced the exact same situations. They are just little windows into the lives of others. Heartbreaking windows. Don't read this on a bad day, trust me.

The Characters

Senri, as a main character, is extremely likeable despite his quiet nature. He's empathetic and sensitive. He doesn't always understand the echoes he sees, but he feels them. And honestly, haven’t we all felt a little like Senri? A bit out of sync, a bit lonely, a bit like we're just observing the world from the sidelines? I know I have. And there are other characters, too! People Senri meets in his daily life. They're not always directly involved in the "ghost" stories, but they add a layer of warmth and connection to the manga. A ray of sunlight filtering through the rainclouds!

The Pacing

The pacing is also spot-on. It's slow and deliberate, allowing you to really soak in the atmosphere and connect with the characters. It's not a manga you can rush through. You need to savor each panel, each line of dialogue, each carefully rendered expression. And I, for one, appreciate that. Tired of these over-the-top, in-your-face manga anyway. Gimme slow and steady! Gimme a manga that makes me want to wrap myself in a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate.

Is it for everyone?

Now, is Actually I Was There Alone for everyone? Probably not. If you're looking for action-packed battles, slapstick comedy, or over-the-top romance, this isn't it. But if you appreciate thoughtful storytelling, beautiful artwork, and a healthy dose of melancholy, then I highly recommend giving it a try.

It's a manga that will make you think, make you feel, and maybe even make you appreciate the small moments of connection in your own life. I know I have. I started noticing all the little details around me. The old graffiti on the bus stop, the worn-out shoes of the man walking ahead of me, the discarded coffee cup on the park bench. Every object, every place has a story, right? Actually I Was There Alone made me see that.

Where to read it?

You can find Actually I Was There Alone on various manga reading platforms online. You can purchase physical copies online too, if you're into that. A word of warning though: it might be a bit hard to find since it's not one of the ultra-popular titles. It’s definitely worth the search! Seriously, add it to your reading list right now. You won't regret it!

And that's it! My rambling thoughts on Actually I Was There Alone. Have you read it? What did you think? If not, are you going to? Tell me in the comments! Okay, there are no comments here. Just pretend I said that and tell me next time we grab coffee, alright?

Oh, and one last thing: maybe bring tissues. Just in case.

Seriously. You have been warned.
