Admission Is A Waste Of Time 29

Hey, grab a seat! You wouldn't BELIEVE what I was just thinking about. Seriously, it's been bugging me all day.
Okay, so here's the thing: college admissions. Specifically, the entire process of getting in. Is it just me, or does it feel like a colossal, time-sucking void? I mean, think about it...all that stress, the sleepless nights, the agonizing over essays... for what exactly?
Let's be real for a sec. It's Admission Is A Waste Of Time 29, right? Okay, maybe not entirely a waste of time. But a HUGE chunk of it definitely is!
Must Read
The Application Abyss
First off, those applications. Oh. My. Goodness. Remember filling those out? It felt like I was selling my soul to the devil...except the devil wants a better GPA, apparently. Seriously, the amount of information they ask for is insane! What's my favorite color? What's my favorite tree? I'm pretty sure I don't even know! Does knowing if I prefer oak or maple really determine my academic potential?
And the essays! Don't even get me STARTED on the essays. "Tell us about a time you overcame adversity." Cue the mental scrambling for a story that sounds deep and meaningful, but also not like you're a complete trainwreck. I mean, come on! I feel like I aged ten years writing those things. And the pressure! Oh, the pressure! Will this essay get me in? Will it make me sound smart enough? Will they even read it?
It's all a game. A very elaborate, very stressful game. And the rules seem to change every year! I heard they are now asking about your pet's favorite toy. Is that even relevant to anything? NOPE.
The Standardized Test Saga
Then there's the standardized testing. The SAT, the ACT...the bane of every high school student's existence. Hours and hours of studying, practice tests, and anxiety-ridden mornings. For what? To prove that you can regurgitate information under pressure? Is that really a good measure of intelligence and potential?
I swear, those tests are designed to trip you up. It's like they're trying to find all the things you don't know, instead of the things you do! And the worst part? They cost money! Lots and lots of money! Test fees, prep courses, tutoring... It's a whole industry designed to prey on our anxieties. It's almost feels like extortion, right?

And let's not forget the insane competition! Everyone's trying to get the highest score, the best grades, the most extracurriculars. It's a constant race to the top, and it can be incredibly exhausting. It is exhausting... trust me.
Extracurricular Overload
Speaking of extracurriculars... Oh boy. Remember that time everyone suddenly became obsessed with volunteering at the animal shelter, even though they're secretly terrified of dogs? The pressure to have a resume that looks like you're saving the world, one bake sale at a time is insane.
Don't get me wrong, extracurriculars are great! But when you're doing them just to impress colleges, it loses its meaning. It becomes another chore, another box to check off. And let's be honest, colleges can see right through that, right? They know when you're faking it! I feel so bad for those kids that participate in multiple after school activities just to have their name in every organization.
I remember having to choose between sleep and participating in more clubs. Yeah, sleep was the obvious choice.
The Waiting Game (aka Torture)
And then... the waiting. The agonizing, nail-biting, soul-crushing waiting. You submit your applications, and then you just sit there, staring at your email inbox, praying for a miracle. Days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months...and the anxiety just keeps building. I swear my palms have been sweating since I submitted my applications.

Checking the online portal becomes an obsession. Refreshing the page every five minutes, hoping to see a change. It's like playing the lottery, except instead of money, you're gambling with your future. And let me tell you, the odds are not in your favor. So many students are crushed when the time arrives and they don't get the answer they hoped for.
And the worst part? You have absolutely no control over the outcome. You've done everything you can, and now you just have to wait and see. It's a cruel and unusual form of punishment, if you ask me. Torture I say!
Is It All Worth It?
So, after all that, is it even worth it? Is the promise of a college degree enough to justify the stress, the anxiety, and the sheer amount of time wasted on the admissions process? That's the million-dollar question, isn't it?
Look, I'm not saying that college is a scam. Education is important, and a college degree can open doors. But I think we need to rethink the way we approach admissions. There has to be a better way to assess students' potential than standardized tests and perfectly crafted essays. I'm not saying those things don't work, but they can be intimidating. Some people test well, some don't. The student shouldn't be graded based on if they can regurgitate the information.
Maybe colleges should focus more on things like creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Maybe they should look at students' portfolios, their projects, their actual accomplishments. Maybe they should even talk to them! Imagine, having a real conversation with a college admissions officer! That would be revolutionary!

And maybe, just maybe, we need to stop putting so much pressure on young people to get into the "best" colleges. What even is the "best" college anyway? Is it the one with the highest rankings? The most prestigious reputation? Or is it the one that's the best fit for you? I have plenty of friends that went to the 'best' college and aren't even using their degree. That's a waste of money.
Alternative Paths
Let's face it, college isn't for everyone. And that's okay! There are plenty of other paths to success. Trade schools, apprenticeships, entrepreneurship... the possibilities are endless! Just because you don't go to college doesn't mean you're doomed to a life of flipping burgers. (Although, there's nothing wrong with flipping burgers if that's what you want to do!)
In fact, some of the most successful people in the world never even went to college! Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg... these guys dropped out and went on to change the world! So, maybe, just maybe, we should stop glorifying the college degree and start celebrating alternative paths to success. It seems like you need to know someone in order to get anywhere.
Who knows? Maybe skipping the whole college admissions madness is the smartest thing you can do. Think of all the time and money you'd save! You could travel the world, start a business, learn a new skill... the possibilities are endless! Just be sure to set yourself up for success and learn a skill.
Rethinking the System
Ultimately, I think we need to have a serious conversation about the college admissions process. It's broken, it's stressful, and it's often unfair. It's time to rethink the system and create a more equitable and less anxiety-inducing path to higher education. It's really tough to get into the better programs. If you don't have connections or high test scores, I don't see it happening.

Maybe we should consider a lottery system. (Okay, maybe not a lottery system, but something less reliant on standardized tests and subjective essays.) Maybe we should focus more on vocational training and apprenticeships. Maybe we should just stop telling kids that college is the only path to success. Maybe that's the path for YOU. I don't know your path!
I don't have all the answers, but I do know that something needs to change. The current system is just not working. It's driving students crazy, it's wasting their time, and it's perpetuating inequality. We need to do better. I had the same problems when I was in high school. I didn't have money for tutors or fancy programs. I just studied really hard.
And hey, if you're currently in the midst of the college admissions process, I feel your pain. Just remember to breathe, take breaks, and don't let the stress consume you. It's just a game, after all. And even if you don't get into your dream school, it's not the end of the world. There are plenty of other opportunities out there. Take the game as a learning experience. Learn and move on.
So, yeah. That's my rant. What do you think? Am I totally off base? Or are you feeling the same way? Let's discuss! Tell me your thoughts! Let's stop this nonsense!
Oh, and one more thing: Don't forget to enjoy your life! College is important, but it's not everything. Don't let the admissions process steal your joy and your passion. Remember to have fun, be yourself, and follow your dreams. That's what really matters. And remember that you are Admission Is A Waste Of Time 29.
