Chapter 1? Just the tip of the iceberg, I suspect. Though, a pretty dramatic tip, wouldn’t you say? We meet our… protagonist? Anti-hero? Let's just call him Mark for now. Mark, who, and I quote, "didn’t mean to abandon Sparky." Uh huh. Sure, Jan. Who ever means to abandon their dog?

Seriously though, can we unpack that for a sec? He was going through a rough patch, apparently. Losing his job, struggling with his mental health… I get it, life happens. It hits you like a ton of bricks, right? But like… you just leave your dog? Like, at a shelter? With no forwarding information? Just… poof?

I'm not judging too hard. Okay, maybe a little. We all make mistakes, right? But abandoning your furry best friend is a special kind of low, isn't it? I mean, Sparky probably thought Mark was coming back! My heart just breaks thinking about it.

The author does a great job of building the tension here. Mark’s nervous, constantly glancing around, trying to avoid any reminders of his past misdeeds. He’s basically living in a constant state of low-grade panic. Which, honestly? He deserves.

He even has a near-miss with a dog that looks like Sparky! Can you imagine the sheer terror? I’d probably have a full-blown anxiety attack right there in the lobby. The author describes the dog’s soulful eyes, its wagging tail… you can practically feel Mark’s guilt radiating off the page.

It’s almost Shakespearean, isn’t it? The tragic hero haunted by his past. Except, you know, with a dog. And significantly less iambic pentameter. Though, maybe that's coming later. I wouldn’t put anything past this story at this point. Do you think there will be sonnets about guilt and abandoned pets? I kind of hope so.

The chapter ends with Mark finally deciding to go to the shelter. To "face his demons," or whatever. More like face the consequences of his actions, am I right? He’s clearly terrified, but also… maybe… a little hopeful? That maybe, just maybe, Sparky has been adopted by a loving family and is living his best life. Or, you know, that Sparky doesn’t recognize him and he can just slink away unnoticed.

Spoiler alert: neither of those things happens. Because that would be way too easy, wouldn’t it?

Sparky's Revenge?

I'm already bracing myself for chapter two. The title, after all, is “Bitten By The Dog I Abandoned.” So, we know a bite is coming. A literal bite? A metaphorical bite? Both? I'm placing my bets on "both."

I'm also wondering about Sparky’s state of mind. Is he angry? Hurt? Confused? Does he even remember Mark? Dogs are smart, but do they hold grudges? I'm picturing a scene where Sparky recognizes Mark immediately, lets out a low growl, and lunges. Justice served, right there in the adoption center.

Or, maybe it's more nuanced than that. Maybe Sparky is initially happy to see Mark, tail wagging, jumping up to greet him... and then, the memory floods back, the realization of what happened, the pain of abandonment. And then the bite. A bite of betrayal, if you will. Dramatic, I know. But this is a story practically begging for melodrama.

Also, let's not forget the logistics of this bite. Is it a minor nip? A full-on mauling? Does Mark need stitches? Does Sparky get put down? Oh god, I hope Sparky doesn't get put down. That would just be too depressing. Even for me, and I read some pretty depressing stuff.

And then there's the whole "abandonment" thing. Like, what was really going on in Mark's life that led him to that point? I feel like we're only getting a superficial glimpse so far. Was it just job loss and mental health struggles? Or was there something more? A hidden addiction? A secret gambling debt? A dramatic family feud? I need answers!

Maybe Sparky knows. Maybe the bite unlocks some hidden memory, some crucial piece of the puzzle. Okay, I’m getting carried away. But seriously, the possibilities are endless.

I'm also wondering if there will be other characters involved. A sympathetic shelter worker? A rival dog owner? A mysterious stranger who knows Mark's secrets? A love interest? Because every good story needs a love interest, right? Even if it's a completely inappropriate one, given the circumstances. Imagine Mark falling for the veterinarian who has to treat his dog bite. Talk about awkward.

And what about the ending? Will Mark redeem himself? Will he win back Sparky’s trust? Will they live happily ever after, frolicking in fields of daisies? Or will Sparky forever hold a grudge, a constant reminder of Mark’s past mistakes? Will Mark become a crazy dog person, volunteering at the shelter, adopting every stray he sees, trying to atone for his sins? I kind of hope so. That would be a pretty satisfying ending.

Or maybe it's a tragedy. Maybe Mark realizes he's beyond redemption, that he can never truly make up for what he did. Maybe he spirals back into depression, abandoning Sparky (again!) and disappearing into the night. Okay, that's probably too dark. Even for this story. I think.

The thing that really gets me, though, is the responsibility aspect of it all. Owning a pet is a huge commitment. They rely on you for everything. Food, shelter, love, attention… you’re their whole world! And to just… throw that away? It’s heartbreaking. It's irresponsible. And it makes me want to shake Mark until his teeth rattle. But hey, maybe the dog bite will do that for me. I'm here for it.

Ultimately, I'm hooked. I need to know what happens next. I need to see Mark suffer (a little). I need to see Sparky get justice (in whatever form that takes). And I need to know if there's any hope for redemption in this twisted tale of abandonment and (possibly) revenge. So, yeah, chapter one definitely did its job.
