Chivalry Of A Failed Knight Volume 1

Chivalry Of A Failed Knight Volume 1

Okay, so picture this: you're at a party, right? And there's that one person – you know, the one who tries so hard to be cool, but it just kinda... doesn't work? They're wearing all the right clothes, saying all the right things (maybe a little too loudly), but something's just…off. They’re almost like the dollar-store version of James Bond. Well, that feeling? That's kinda how I felt reading the first volume of Chivalry of a Failed Knight.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it's bad! It's just... interesting. Let's dive in, shall we?

The Premise: Knights, But Make it Anime

The basic setup is this: We're in a world where certain individuals, called Blazer Knights, can manifest souls as weapons and use magical abilities. Cool, right? Think Soul Eater or Fate/stay night, but with a slightly less bleak outlook (at least initially). Our protagonist is Ikki Kurogane, who is, shall we say, struggling to be taken seriously. He's the textbook definition of an underdog. I mean, the dude's nickname is literally “Worst One.” Ouch.

He’s constantly underestimated and overlooked. He’s basically the guy who always gets picked last for dodgeball. (Seriously, have you ever BEEN picked last for dodgeball? Traumatizing!).

The "Failed" Knight: A Hero We Can All Relate To?

Ikki's a good guy, though. He's hardworking, determined, and genuinely wants to prove himself. He's constantly fighting against the odds, pushing himself to improve. And honestly, that's where the appeal lies. He’s not some overpowered prodigy who effortlessly overcomes every obstacle. He has to work for it. We see his struggles, his doubts, and his insecurities. That makes him relatable, you know? (Unless you are an overpowered prodigy, in which case, congrats, I guess?).

He really does embody that whole "never give up" trope, which, admittedly, can be a little cliché, but in Ikki’s case, it feels earned. He gets knocked down a lot (both literally and figuratively), but he always gets back up.

Enter Stella: The Crimson Princess

Now, let's talk about Stella Vermillion. She's basically the opposite of Ikki. She's a super talented, super powerful princess from a foreign kingdom. She's also... a bit of a tsundere. You know, that character archetype who's all tough on the outside but secretly soft on the inside? Yeah, that's Stella. She's initially very cold and dismissive towards Ikki, but, of course, things start to change as the story progresses.

Their relationship starts with a very awkward situation – a “duel” that ends with…well, let’s just say compromising positions. (Anime, am I right?). From there, their dynamic is a push-and-pull of rivalry and budding romance. It’s pretty standard fare, but it's executed well enough to keep things interesting.

Action and Animation (in the Anime Adaptation)

The first volume mainly sets up the world and introduces the characters. There are some fight scenes, but they're not the main focus. The anime adaptation, however, does ramp up the action significantly. If you’re more into the visual spectacle, that's definitely something to consider.

I'd say give the anime a watch if you’re struggling to get invested in the book right away. It really helps to bring the battles to life.

Final Thoughts: Worth a Read?

So, is Chivalry of a Failed Knight Volume 1 worth reading? I'd say yes, but with some reservations. It's not groundbreaking, and it definitely relies on some familiar anime tropes. However, Ikki's journey is compelling, and the world is interesting enough to keep you engaged. Plus, who doesn't love a good underdog story? If you’re looking for something light, entertaining, and maybe a little bit inspiring, give it a shot. Just don’t expect a masterpiece. Think of it as that fun, slightly cheesy action movie you watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Just remember, even the "failed" knight can have his day. And maybe, just maybe, you might find yourself rooting for him. I know I was (even if I was also rolling my eyes a little bit at some of the clichés).
