Devil Dog The Hound Of Hell Cast

Devil Dog The Hound Of Hell Cast

Okay, so picture this: it's Halloween night. I'm, like, twelve years old, armed with a pillowcase and the fervent belief that I'm going to score ALL the Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Then, BAM! From behind Mrs. Henderson's meticulously decorated graveyard lawn display leaps... something. Honestly, it was probably just her overly enthusiastic Golden Retriever in a cheap devil costume, but in the dim light, it looked like the Hound of Hell itself had come to collect. I screamed. Loudly. My Reese's-dreaming was, shall we say, temporarily suspended.

And you know what that terrifying/hilarious (in retrospect) moment reminded me of? Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell, that delightfully cheesy 1978 movie! I recently re-watched it (for research purposes, obviously) and it got me thinking about the cast. Not exactly a group of A-listers, but definitely a collection of people who deserve a little appreciation for giving us this slice of cinematic weirdness.

So, let’s dive in, shall we? (Don't worry, no actual hellhounds will leap out... probably.)

Richard Crenna: The Beleaguered Father

Ah, Richard Crenna. You probably know him best as Colonel Trautman from the Rambo films. A total icon! But before he was dispensing sage advice and heavy artillery, he was Mike Barry, the totally bewildered dad in Devil Dog. He's the guy desperately trying to understand why his sweet German Shepherd suddenly gave birth to a demon puppy. Classic dad problems, right?

Crenna brings a certain gravitas to the role, which is honestly kind of impressive considering the absurdity of the plot. He’s the straight man in a world gone barking mad (pun intended!), and his performance is surprisingly…believable? Well, as believable as you can be when your family pet is literally possessed.

Yvonne De Carlo: The Worried Mother

Yvonne De Carlo, now she's a name! Morticia Addams herself! Okay, maybe not herself, but she was Lily Munster in The Munsters. A queen! In Devil Dog, she plays Joanne Barry, the equally freaked-out wife and mother. While Crenna is all about trying to rationalize the situation, De Carlo nails the 'this is my nightmare and I can't wake up' vibe. She’s got great scream acting, which is crucial in a film where a demonic dog terrorizes your family. And let’s be real, who wouldn't be screaming?

Michael and Ike Eisenmann: The Troubled Children

Okay, these two are interesting! Michael and Ike Eisenmann played the Barry children, Charlie and Billy. They were child actors back in the 70s. They’re perfectly… normal. And that’s kind of the point. They’re just regular kids caught in the crosshairs of a Satanic conspiracy involving a ridiculously cute, yet evil, puppy. Honestly, I couldn’t find a ton of info about them after their child acting days. (Seriously, if anyone knows what they’re up to now, spill the tea!).

Victor Jory: The Mysterious Occultist

Victor Jory. Now there's a face you know from like, a million old movies! He plays the ominous Dr. Warneke, the guy who's way too interested in the Barry family’s pet situation. Jory brings a creepy, understated menace to the role. He's not twirling a mustache or anything, but you just know he's up to no good. (Spoiler alert: he is!). He’s the one that provides the exposition, meaning, he is the character in the movie that knows a lot about the strange things that are happening. Thank you, Victor!

The Real Star: The Devil Dog (s!)

Let's be honest, the real stars of Devil Dog are the dogs themselves. Or rather, the dogs that played the Devil Dog. They used a bunch of different pups. The main dog looks like a fluffy little German Shepherd mix, all innocent eyes and wagging tail... until it's not! The dog’s transformation is truly one of the best parts of the movie. It’s so adorably wicked, it’s almost hard to be scared. Almost.

It’s also worth noting: the dog trainer was Eleanor Keaton, Buster Keaton's widow! Pretty cool, right? She even has a tiny cameo in the movie.

So, there you have it: a quick look at the cast of Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell. Not a star-studded affair, but a group of actors who committed to the bit and delivered a genuinely entertaining (and occasionally terrifying) B-movie experience. If you're looking for a fun, cheesy horror movie to watch on a spooky night, you could do a lot worse! Just maybe keep your own pets at a safe distance... just in case.
