Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde Chapter 2 Summary

So, Utterson, our reliable (and slightly boring, let's be honest) lawyer, is still stressing over Dr. Jekyll's will. Remember that crazy clause? The one where, if Jekyll disappears, all his possessions go to a Mr. Edward Hyde? Yeah, that's still bugging him. And can you blame the poor guy?

Seriously though, imagine if your bestie left everything to some random dude named "Slugger McSluggerton" in their will? You'd be a little concerned, right? Just me? Okay, moving on…

The Search Begins! (Sort Of)

Utterson decides he needs to see this Hyde character with his own two eyes. Like, desperately needs to. It's eating him alive! But he doesn't know what Hyde looks like. Cue the dramatic music!

He starts hanging around the entrance to Jekyll's laboratory (which, side note, sounds super creepy even before we know about Hyde). He's basically stalking the place. I mean, dedication, right? Or maybe mild obsession?

It's this back door, all dingy and mysterious, not the main entrance. Stevenson really knows how to paint a picture, huh? It gives you that 'something's-not-right' vibe immediately.

Anyway, after much lurking (and probably a few rainy nights – because everything's more dramatic in the rain), Utterson finally gets his wish. Or, rather, his nightmare.

Hyde Makes His Entrance (And It's Not Pretty)

BOOM! Hyde appears. And guess what? He's even creepier than Utterson imagined. And Utterson imagined pretty creepy. In fact, Utterson gets this immediate, visceral reaction. It's hard to pinpoint what's wrong, but there's something deeply unsettling about the guy.

Think about it: that feeling when you meet someone and you just know, deep down, that they're bad news? Like they just drip... wrongness? That's Hyde.

He's short, maybe a bit deformed (it's kind of vague, but definitely not a GQ model), and has this intense aura of... unpleasantness. Like he just radiates evil vibes. shudders

Utterson confronts Hyde, and it's... awkward. Hyde is rude, almost savage. He even gives Utterson this nasty, disdainful look. And get this – he then willingly provides Utterson with his address! Like he's daring Utterson to come after him. Bold move, Mr. Hyde. Bold move.

The Name's Hyde... But Who Is He, Really?

After the unsettling encounter, Utterson pays a visit to Jekyll. He’s like, "Dude, who is this Hyde guy, and why is he getting all your stuff?" But Jekyll gets all cagey and evasive. He's all, "Oh, don't worry about it, Utterson. It's all fine. Just... trust me."

Famous last words, am I right?

Jekyll basically tells Utterson to mind his own business. He says he can handle Hyde. Which, obviously, is a massive red flag. I mean, come on, Jekyll! Don't be so secretive!

Utterson, being the loyal friend (and nosy lawyer) that he is, isn't satisfied. He's still deeply suspicious of Hyde and worried about Jekyll. He suspects Hyde has some kind of hold over Jekyll, maybe even blackmail. And he is not wrong.

So, yeah, Chapter 2 ends with Utterson even more confused and concerned than before. He's got a creepy guy, a suspicious will, and a secretive friend. What's a lawyer to do?
