Global Freeze I Created An Apocalypse Shelter Raw

Global Freeze I Created An Apocalypse Shelter Raw

Okay, so picture this: me, last Tuesday, wrestling with a rogue cucumber in my garden. I swear, that thing was trying to escape. Anyway, as I'm battling this veggie (which, let's be honest, I probably planted too close to the zucchini mafia), it hits me: what if things went REALLY south? Like, global freeze, asteroid impact, zombie squirrels level south?

Yeah, yeah, I know. Dramatic. But honestly, haven't we all had that fleeting thought? The world feels a little…precarious lately. So, instead of just shrugging it off, I decided to do something about it. Thus began my descent into the wonderfully weird world of apocalypse prepping.

And the first thing I tackled? A raw apocalypse shelter. That's right. Raw. As in, minimal tools, maximum resourcefulness. Think "caveman meets engineer," but with slightly better hygiene.

Why Raw? Why Now?

Good question! My reasoning is twofold. Firstly, if the world actually ends, Home Depot probably won't be doing any more midnight sales. So relying on readily available, modern building materials seems a bit…optimistic. Secondly, I wanted a challenge! I’m not saying I'm actually expecting a global freeze (though, with the way the weather's been, who knows?), but the skills you pick up building something like this are invaluable. We’re talking problem-solving, resource management, and a whole lot of sweat equity. Plus, it's a great excuse to get out of the house.

Basically, I'm channeling my inner Bear Grylls, but with a slightly less intense need to drink my own… well, you know.

Phase One: Location, Location, Location!

First things first: finding the right spot. This is crucial. You need water access (preferably a spring or well), decent soil for potential future farming, and some kind of natural protection – a hill, a forest, something to shield you from the elements (and potentially roaming gangs of cucumber-craving survivors, I guess). I ended up choosing a spot on my property near a small creek. It's got a gentle slope, good drainage, and is partially hidden by some pretty dense woodland. Not bad, right?

Side note: make sure you have the legal right to build on the land! I’d hate for you to survive the apocalypse only to be evicted by the homeowner's association. Awkward.

The Digging Begins (Oh, the Pain!)

Okay, so this is where the "raw" part really kicks in. Forget fancy power tools. I’m talking shovels, picks, and good old-fashioned elbow grease. The plan is to build a semi-underground structure, using the earth itself for insulation. Think Hobbit hole, but slightly less charming and probably smelling faintly of dirt. I’ve been digging the foundation for about a week now, and let me tell you, my back is screaming. But hey, gains, right? Post-apocalyptic strongman competition, here I come!

The soil is surprisingly rocky, which is both a blessing and a curse. Curse because, well, rocks. Blessing because I can use those rocks for building the walls! Resourcefulness, baby!

Building With What You've Got

My building strategy is basically this: find it, use it. Rocks for the foundation and walls, logs from fallen trees for structural support, mud and clay for mortar (because, apparently, that's a thing people used to do!). It's a slow process, but strangely satisfying. I’m learning so much about the land, the materials it provides, and my own limitations (turns out, I’m not as strong as I thought I was).

Pro-tip: Wear gloves. Trust me on this one.

The Future is (Hopefully) Not Frozen

So, that's where I'm at. Digging, hauling, and generally feeling like a prehistoric pioneer. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. Is it going to guarantee my survival in a global freeze? Probably not. But am I learning valuable skills, connecting with nature, and having a bizarrely fun time? Absolutely! And hey, even if the apocalypse never comes, I'll have a pretty awesome root cellar. Maybe I can even grow that escape-artist cucumber down there. Revenge will be sweet (and slightly pickled).

I'll keep you all updated on my progress (assuming the internet doesn't melt down in the process). Wish me luck! And maybe start stockpiling some woolly socks. Just in case.

P.S. If anyone has tips for dealing with rogue cucumbers, please let me know. This is a serious problem.
