I Somehow Got Stronger By Farming

I Somehow Got Stronger By Farming

Okay, so I’m not talking about suddenly developing superhuman strength after a particularly vigorous zucchini harvest. No ripping phone books in half here. But something genuinely weird (in a good way!) happened after I started spending more time farming, or rather, gardening intensely. I got… stronger. And not just in the ‘can-carry-more-grocery-bags-in-one-trip’ kind of way, though that definitely happened.

The "Farm" Life Chose Me (Sort Of)

Let’s back up. I live in a city. A pretty big one. My experience with "farming" consisted of accidentally killing succulents. But then, pandemic happened. Suddenly, the grocery store felt like a gladiator arena, and the idea of growing my own food seemed less like a hobby and more like… well, maybe not survival, but definitely a way to reclaim some sanity. So, I started small. A few tomato plants, some herbs. Then, a raised bed. Then another. Suddenly, I was farming, even if it was on a patch of land the size of my living room.

And that’s when I noticed it. The subtle shift. It wasn’t overnight. It was like… imagine slowly turning up the volume on a radio. At first, you barely notice. But then, suddenly, you’re singing along at the top of your lungs.

The Unexpected Workout

Think about it. Farming (or gardening, whatever you want to call it) is basically a full-body workout disguised as a relaxing activity. All that squatting to weed? Killer for your quads and glutes. Seriously, my butt is in better shape than it has been in years! Digging in the soil? Hello, biceps and triceps! And don't even get me started on carrying heavy buckets of water. That's practically a farmer's version of kettlebell swings. I bet CrossFitters would pay good money for the workout I get lugging compost around.

It’s not just about lifting and carrying, though. It’s the sustained effort. It’s being out in the sun, building stamina. It's bending, stretching, twisting. It's like a low-impact, full-body conditioning program you don't even realize you're enrolled in. I used to get winded walking up a flight of stairs. Now? Bring on the hills!

More Than Just Muscles

But the strength I gained wasn't just physical. There's a mental toughness that comes with nurturing something from a tiny seed to a thriving plant. You learn patience. You learn resilience. You learn that things don’t always go as planned (slugs are the bane of my existence!), and you have to adapt.

Think of it like this: life throws curveballs. We all know that. But when you’re farming, you’re constantly dealing with mini-curveballs: unexpected frost, pests, nutrient deficiencies. Each little challenge forces you to problem-solve, to learn, to adapt. And that builds a different kind of strength – the strength to face whatever life throws your way, knowing that you can figure it out.

Why Should You Care?

Okay, so you’re not planning on quitting your job and becoming a full-time farmer. I get it. But even incorporating a little bit of gardening into your life can have a huge impact. You don’t need acres of land. A few pots on your balcony will do. Grow some herbs. Grow some tomatoes. Grow a single, defiant sunflower.

It’s not about becoming a bodybuilder (unless that’s your thing, in which case, go for it!). It’s about connecting with nature. It's about getting some fresh air and sunshine. It's about doing something that's both physically and mentally stimulating. It's about growing your own food, even if it's just a little bit. And, yes, it's about getting a little bit stronger in the process. Who wouldn’t want that?

Plus, think of the bragging rights! "Oh, this pesto? Yeah, I grew the basil myself." *Chef's kiss*

Ready to Get Started?

So, ditch the gym membership (just kidding… mostly) and grab a trowel. Get your hands dirty. Plant something. Nurture it. Watch it grow. And watch yourself grow, too. You might be surprised at the strength you find within yourself – both inside and out.

And if you accidentally kill a succulent or two along the way? Don't worry. We've all been there. Just try again. Resilience, remember? Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some weeds to pull. Apparently, they didn't get the memo about my newfound strength.
