My In-laws Are Obsessed With Me Chapter 20

Okay, so you guys remember last time, right? Chapter 19 cliffhanger? My in-laws were, like, FULL ON planning a surprise birthday party for me. A surprise! For me! As if they don't already shower me with enough affection (and gifts, let's be real). So, Chapter 20... buckle up!
Operation: Birthday Bonanza
The chapter kicks off with my husband, bless his clueless heart, walking into the kitchen while his mom is whispering conspiratorially on the phone. About me. Surprise, surprise. He gives me this "everything's normal" look, which, let's be honest, is totally unconvincing. I mean, come on! Has he MET his mother?
She hangs up, gives him a wink (a WINK!), and then starts rambling about…gardening? Gardening! As if I’m suddenly that interested in petunias. The distraction was so obvious, it was practically screaming. I swear, she almost winked at me too. Like, "Hehehe, we're up to something, but you'll never guess!" Oh, I guessed, honey. I totally guessed.
Must Read
Then, his dad gets in on the act. He starts asking me super specific questions about my favorite foods. Not like, "Do you like pizza?" No, no. It's more like, "Is there a particular type of artisanal, wood-fired pizza with imported mozzarella and truffle oil that you've been dreaming about?" Ugh. Guys, they’re laying it on thick!
Like, please. I can see through your thinly veiled attempts at gathering intel, people!

The entire week leading up to my birthday was basically a masterclass in awkward conversations and forced nonchalance. Every time I walked into a room, they'd all freeze and start talking about the weather. The weather! In Southern California! As if we ever have anything but sunshine. It was comical. Honestly, I almost felt bad for them. Almost.
The Gift That Keeps on Giving (Anxiety)
And the gifts! Oh, the gifts. They started arriving a week early. Just small things, you know? A new designer handbag "just because," a fancy coffee machine "to make your mornings brighter," a diamond pendant... okay, maybe not so small. My husband was starting to look a little pale. I think even he was starting to feel a bit overwhelmed by the sheer volume of adoration. I mean, is there such a thing as too much love? I'm starting to think so!

The funny thing is, I actually hate surprises. I'm a planner. I like knowing what's going on. So, this whole charade was basically my worst nightmare playing out in real time. But… I also didn’t want to hurt their feelings. They were putting in so much effort! It’s not their fault they're a little…intense.
The Big Day Arrives
Finally, the day arrived. My birthday. I woke up to breakfast in bed, complete with mimosas and a chorus of "Happy Birthday" sung slightly off-key by my in-laws. It was… a lot. They were so excited, I almost felt guilty for knowing what was coming. Almost.

My husband suggested a "casual" lunch at his parents' house. "Just a quiet afternoon," he said. Right. Like I believed that for a second. As soon as we pulled into the driveway, I saw the cars. Lots of cars. And balloons. Oh god, the balloons. It was full-blown party central.
And that, my friends, is where Chapter 20 ends. Standing in the driveway, facing a horde of well-meaning, overly enthusiastic relatives. What's a girl to do? That's the million-dollar question, isn't it? Stay tuned for Chapter 21. I promise, it's going to be a wild ride! What happens next? I really don't know but I'm afraid!
