My Step Sister Who Says Go Die Everyday

My Step Sister Who Says Go Die Everyday

Okay, so picture this: you’re finally starting to get used to the whole blended family thing. The awkward silences are (mostly) gone, you’ve figured out whose turn it is to do the dishes (it’s always yours, isn’t it?), and then BAM! Your step-sister, let’s call her Brenda (because why not?), starts greeting you every morning with a cheerful, sing-songy, “Go die!”

Yeah, you read that right. “Go die.” Not “good morning,” not “have a nice day,” but a full-on, slightly morbid, command to shuffle off this mortal coil. Initially, I was horrified. I’m talking stage-five horrified. Like, did I accidentally swap her shampoo with drain cleaner? Did I eat the last slice of pizza that was CLEARLY labeled “Brenda’s Pizza – DO NOT TOUCH”? What was going on?!

My first reaction, naturally, was to dramatically clutch my chest and gasp, “Brenda! How could you?! Am I not family? Does our shared love of reality TV mean nothing to you?!” I may have even thrown in a faint for good measure. Okay, maybe not the faint, but the clutching and gasping? Definitely happened.

Turns out, Brenda’s "go die" is… complicated. It’s not a genuine death wish, thankfully. Apparently, it’s an inside joke she picked up from… wait for it… a K-Pop song. Yep. A ridiculously catchy K-Pop song. You know, the kind where the beat gets stuck in your head for weeks and you find yourself humming it while doing the dishes (which, let’s be honest, you’re still doing all the time).

She explained (through bursts of giggles) that the phrase, in its original Korean context, is more like a playful, sassy “get outta here” or “whatever.” Somewhere along the line, the translation got a little… lost in translation. And now, it’s her go-to greeting for anyone she feels comfortable enough to tease. So, me, apparently.

Which brings me to the daily dilemma: how do I react? Do I continue with the dramatic gasping? Do I fire back with my own equally morbid greeting (suggestions welcome, by the way!)? Do I just ignore her and pretend I didn’t hear anything? The possibilities are endless!

For a while, I tried ignoring it. But honestly, it's kinda hard to ignore someone telling you to "go die" with a smile. I even tried responding with, “No, you go die first!” Which, in retrospect, probably wasn’t the most mature reaction. My stepmom gave me that look.

The Solution (Kind Of)

Eventually, I decided to embrace the absurdity. Now, when Brenda says “Go die!” I respond with, “Only if you come with me! We can haunt the local grocery store and move all the pickles to the peanut butter aisle!”

It’s ridiculous. It’s silly. And it actually makes us both laugh. Turns out, underneath the slightly alarming greeting, there's a genuine attempt at connection. She's trying to be funny, to be quirky, to be… Brenda.

It's taught me a valuable lesson: sometimes, the most bizarre behavior is just a poorly translated attempt at friendship. And sometimes, the best way to deal with awkward family dynamics is to lean into the weirdness and add your own flavor.

So, the next time your step-sibling (or any family member, really) does something totally bonkers, before you start plotting your escape (or a really elaborate revenge scheme), take a breath. Try to see the humor in it. Maybe even… join in. You might be surprised at what you discover.

And who knows, maybe you’ll even start greeting your friends with “Go die!” (Just kidding… mostly.)

The point is, family is weird. Blended families are even weirder. And sometimes, the weirdness is what makes it all worthwhile. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a date with a pickle jar in the peanut butter aisle. Brenda’s driving.
