Reincarnated Into A Game As The Hero's Friend

Okay, so picture this: you're living your totally normal, possibly slightly boring life (no judgment!), and then BAM! You wake up... inside a video game. I know, right? Sounds like the start of a really cheesy isekai anime.
But wait, there's more! You're not the super-powered, chosen one hero. Nope. You're… the hero's friend. The sidekick. The one who provides moral support and occasionally gets kidnapped. I mean, seriously, universe? Couldn't I have at least been the cool mage with the awesome staff?
Welcome to Eldoria, Population: Mostly Monsters
So, there I was, in the ridiculously oversized tunic of… well, let's call him Barnaby. Barnaby, the perpetually optimistic, slightly clumsy, and fiercely loyal friend of our destined hero, Gareth. Gareth, naturally, was ridiculously handsome, impossibly strong, and had a destiny bigger than my student loan debt.
Must Read
My first thought? "This is going to be so much more work than watching Netflix." And honestly, I wasn't wrong. Eldoria was a gorgeous world, full of sprawling forests, majestic mountains, and… you guessed it, hordes of monsters trying to eat our faces. Great.
Gareth, being the hero and all, was totally pumped. He was already swinging his ridiculously shiny sword, shouting about vanquishing evil and saving the princess. I, on the other hand, was mostly concerned with not tripping over my own feet and becoming monster kibble. Priorities, you know?

Friendship is Magic (and Also Plot Armor)
Now, you might think being the hero's friend is a thankless job. And sometimes, okay, a lot of times, it felt that way. Gareth would charge headfirst into danger, completely oblivious to the fact that I was lagging behind, desperately trying to avoid stepping in something unspeakable. But, here’s the thing:
Being the friend gave me a unique perspective. Gareth was so focused on the Big Picture – defeating the Dark Lord, saving the world, maybe finally getting that date with the aforementioned princess – that he often missed the smaller details. Like, say, the cleverly hidden trap, or the monster that was about to sneak up behind him. That's where I came in!

Think of me as Gareth's early warning system, his emotional support badger, his slightly sarcastic but ultimately reliable wingman. Plus, let’s be real, I had the ultimate plot armor. They can’t kill off the hero's best friend... right? Right?!
And you know what? I actually started to enjoy it. I learned how to use a surprisingly effective sling shot. I became a master of distraction techniques (mostly involving shouting loudly and throwing things). I even managed to talk my way out of a few monster encounters. (Turns out, goblins are surprisingly susceptible to bad puns.)

More Than Just a Sidekick
Being Barnaby wasn't about being overshadowed by Gareth. It was about using my skills – my wit, my resourcefulness, my uncanny ability to find the perfect camping spot – to help him succeed. And in doing so, I discovered strengths I never knew I had.
I learned that courage isn't just about swinging a sword and charging into battle. It's about standing by your friend, even when you're terrified. It's about using your unique talents to make a difference, no matter how small it may seem. And most importantly, it's about embracing the adventure, even when you're wearing a ridiculously oversized tunic.

So, yeah, I might have been reincarnated as the hero's friend, not the hero himself. But honestly? I wouldn't trade it for the world. Because in the end, I realized that being a good friend, being a supportive presence, being the Barnaby to someone's Gareth, is a pretty damn heroic thing to be.
And besides, someone has to make sure the hero doesn't forget to pack snacks for the quest. That's a crucial role, people!
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a Dark Lord to help vanquish, and a ridiculously handsome hero to keep from getting himself killed. Wish me luck!
