Suppressed By All My Childish Fears

Suppressed By All My Childish Fears

Ever feel like you're being held hostage... by your inner child? Yeah, me too. It's like having a tiny, highly anxious dictator running the show, and their main strategy is based on fears you haven't thought about since you were convinced monsters lived under your bed. Except now, the "monster" is public speaking, or networking, or, you know, just generally adulting.

I call it being "Suppressed By All My Childish Fears," or SBAMCF for short. Catchy, right? It's a condition characterized by an overwhelming desire to avoid anything that even remotely resembles a situation that once caused you playground-level distress. Think of it like this: you're trying to launch a rocket ship (your awesome adult life), but the launchpad is covered in Lego bricks of anxiety.

The Usual Suspects: Childhood Fears in Adult Disguise

Let's unpack the usual suspects, shall we? We've got the classic fear of rejection, which basically translates to: "Remember that time you weren't picked for the kickball team? Yeah, that's going to happen again, but this time it's a job opportunity! RUN!" This fear loves to whisper insidious little lies in your ear, like, "They'll never like your ideas," or "You're not qualified enough."

Then there's the fear of failure. Oh, this one's a doozy. Remember getting a bad grade on that math test in fourth grade? Well, congratulations, now it's projected onto every single project you undertake! This fear manifests as crippling procrastination and a deep-seated belief that you're going to mess everything up. It’s the gremlin in your brain, gleefully shouting, "I TOLD YOU SO!" before anything even goes wrong.

And don't forget the fear of being embarrassed. This one's my personal favorite (said with dripping sarcasm). It's the reason I once spent a solid hour debating whether or not to wear a slightly-too-loud shirt to a meeting. "What if people judge me?" my inner child wailed. "What if they think I'm trying too hard?" The horror! It's like being perpetually haunted by the ghost of that time you tripped in front of the whole school cafeteria.

Symptoms Include: Avoidance, Procrastination, and Existential Dread

So, how do you know if you're suffering from SBAMCF? Well, common symptoms include: consistently avoiding social situations, procrastinating on important tasks until the last possible minute, and experiencing random bouts of existential dread while folding laundry. You know, the usual Tuesday afternoon stuff.

It also includes things like: obsessively rehearsing conversations in your head, only to completely blank when the actual conversation happens. Or maybe it's meticulously planning every single detail of your life, just to feel some semblance of control. Sound familiar?

Fighting Back (Armed With Humor and Self-Compassion)

Okay, so we've established that our inner children are sometimes jerks. What can we do about it? The good news is, you're not doomed to a life of hiding under the covers. The key is to acknowledge these fears, laugh at how ridiculous they are sometimes, and then gently push yourself outside your comfort zone.

Think of it like this: your inner child is a scared little puppy. You wouldn't yell at a scared puppy, would you? No! You'd offer it a treat and reassure it that everything's okay. Same goes for your inner child. Offer yourself some compassion, remind yourself that you're capable and resilient, and maybe bribe yourself with some chocolate.

Start small. Maybe strike up a conversation with a stranger in line at the grocery store. Or volunteer to give a presentation at work (even if it makes you want to throw up a little). The more you expose yourself to these "scary" situations, the more you'll realize that they're not actually as terrifying as your inner child makes them out to be.

Remember, conquering your childish fears isn't about becoming fearless. It's about learning to manage your anxiety and not let it control your life. It's about telling your inner child, "Okay, I hear you, but we're doing this anyway." Because, let's be honest, adulting is hard enough without being constantly sabotaged by your fourth-grade insecurities.
