Basically, his "retirement plan" is constantly being bombarded by "unforeseen circumstances."

The first chapter does a great job of setting the stage for this central conflict. We see glimpses of HD's past, his incredible power, and the legacy he's trying to escape. We also get a taste of the absurdity of his situation. He's this incredibly powerful being who could crush anyone who bothers him, but he’s so determined to be left alone that he goes to ridiculous lengths to avoid confrontation. Which leads to some pretty funny moments, if I’m being honest.

Overall, chapter one is a fantastic introduction to the series. It establishes the main character's motivations, the central conflict, and the overall tone of the story.
