Basically, he's the kind of guy you'd find dramatically leaning against a dimly lit wall in a tavern, probably nursing a drink and looking impossibly handsome. I’m not drooling, you’re drooling!

The chapter opens with Elara trying to live a quiet life, hidden away from the world. She's got a cozy cottage, probably some cute animal companions (I'm picturing a sassy black cat, naturally), and she's just trying to avoid any unnecessary drama. Which, let's be honest, is a mood we can all get behind.

It’s the kind of tension that makes you want to grab a giant bowl of popcorn and settle in for the long haul. You know, the "I hate you... but I also kind of find you incredibly attractive" kind of tension. It’s a classic!

One of the things that really grabbed me about this first chapter was the writing style. It's engaging, witty, and doesn't take itself too seriously. The author does a fantastic job of setting the scene and introducing the characters without getting bogged down in exposition. It’s a fast-paced start that leaves you wanting more.

The world-building is also pretty intriguing. We get glimpses of a larger magical world, but it's not overwhelming. It's enough to pique your interest and make you want to learn more, but not so much that you feel like you need a glossary to understand what's going on.

I'm already placing bets on how long it will take for Elara and Kael to go from "I can't stand you" to "I think I'm falling in love with you." I'm giving it... three chapters, tops. Anyone want to take me up on that?

And I'm definitely curious to find out more about the threat that's pursuing Elara. Who are they? What do they want? And will Kael be able to protect her, or will she have to save herself (and him)? So many questions!

Overall, the first chapter of "The Witch And The Mercenary" is a fantastic introduction to what promises to be an exciting and entertaining story. It's got all the elements I love in a fantasy novel: magic, action, romance, and a healthy dose of humor. What more could you ask for?
