Look, the animation is gorgeous. No arguments there. Shinkai definitely knows how to make snow look epic.
And the soundtrack? Beautiful! But even pretty snow and lovely music can't save a plot that's slower than dial-up internet.
Seriously, how much time can we spend watching trains go by? I get it, distance is a thing. But maybe, just maybe, try a bus?
The Sadness Factor
Everyone cries, right? About the unrequited love. About the missed connections. About the general melancholy of existence.
I… didn't. Maybe I'm dead inside. Or maybe I just needed more than pretty scenery to connect with the characters. I'm not sure which is worse.
Don't get me wrong, sadness is fine! But I felt like I was *supposed* to be sad, not actually feeling it. It felt… forced? Like someone yelling "FEEL THE FEELS!" at my face.
The Protagonist Problem
Our main guy, Takaki? He's… a bit of a downer, isn't he? Moping around for years about the same girl. Dude, move on!
I understand holding onto memories. But clinging to them so tightly that you can't experience anything new? That's a recipe for a lonely existence.
I found myself wanting to yell at the screen. "Get a hobby! Join a club! Adopt a puppy!" Anything!
The Girl(s) Problem
And what about the girls? Akari is sweet, but mostly just a memory. Kanae, the poor girl who's obviously in love with Takaki, gets completely ignored. Ouch.
It's like the movie is saying, "Yep, she's nice, but not Akari! So, she's irrelevant." Harsh, man. Harsh.
Maybe that's the point. The crushing reality that some loves are just not meant to be. But it still feels… incomplete.
Visuals vs. Substance
Again, the visuals are stunning! Seriously, frame-worthy stuff. You could mute the movie and just stare at the backgrounds for hours.
But a pretty picture doesn't automatically make a compelling story. I needed more substance. More emotional connection.
It felt like the director was more focused on making a beautiful screensaver than a character-driven narrative. I'm sorry! Is that mean?
An Unpopular Opinion?
Look, I know this is probably an unpopular opinion. And I'm prepared for the backlash.
But sometimes, just sometimes, I think people get caught up in the hype. We see beautiful art and assume it's automatically profound.
Maybe 5 Centimeters Per Second just wasn't for me. Maybe my heart is made of stone. Or maybe, just maybe, it's okay to think it's just… fine. It's okay, right?
Besides, I am very impressed with the falling snow visuals. Makoto Shinkai is a mastermind of atmospheric art.
