Okay, here's my unpopular opinion. I kind of enjoyed Thorpe’s dry wit! Even though he's clearly a terrible person, some of his lines are hilarious. I know, I know, I shouldn’t be laughing. But it’s just so darkly funny!
Like when he's trying to subtly hint that Scott needs to, ahem, disappear. The way he phrases things is just… genius, in a twisted kind of way. “We must help Norman find peace”. *Peace* indeed.
And the casual homophobia of the time is just appalling, even though, thankfully, it's presented in the series to highlight the absurdity and cruelness of it.
First Episode Verdict
Overall, the first episode is a fantastic setup. It introduces the key players, establishes the stakes, and throws in enough hints of scandal to keep you hooked. Hugh Grant is brilliant, and the supporting cast is equally strong.
The pacing is perfect. Not too fast, not too slow. Just enough to leave you wanting more. Mission accomplished!
And the costumes! Seriously, those 70s suits are a crime against fashion, but somehow, they work perfectly. A visual reminder of a very different, and very scandalous, time.
