Okay, let's talk about Freak Show. Specifically, episode two. And even more specifically, the cast!
The Usual Suspects: We Love (to Watch) Them!
First, we gotta give it up to Jessica Lange. Her Elsa Mars is a hot mess. But, you know, a *glamorous* hot mess. Who else could make owning a freak show so... aspirational?
Then there's Sarah Paulson as Bette and Dot. Two heads are definitely better than one when it comes to acting talent. Sarah slays, as always.
Evan Peters? Heartthrob alert! Even with that bowl cut. He's Jimmy Darling, and he's got strong man AND strong love interests.
Kathy Bates! Kathy Bates as Ethel Darling is just perfection. Her accent? Spot on. Her loyalty? Fierce. We bow down.
And of course, Angela Bassett. Seeing her as Desiree Dupree is iconic. Three breasts and all! No shade, only love.
New Faces (and Interesting Choices)
Now, let's get to the newcomers. Finn Wittrock arrived on the scene. Hello, Dandy Mott! Talk about privileged and utterly deranged.
Naomi Grossman returns as Pepper, but this time with a much larger role. I loved her innocence and sweetness, amidst all the darkness.
Then, there’s Wes Bentley. As Edward Mordrake. The makeup? Terrifyingly awesome! But was his performance... good? Hmmm.
Unpopular Opinion Alert!
Here's where I might lose some of you. Wes Bentley as Edward Mordrake? I wasn’t *completely* sold. Sorry not sorry.
Don't get me wrong, the visual of Mordrake was fantastic. The second face on the back of his head? Nightmare fuel. The delivery fell a little flat for me. It lacked a certain... menace?
Maybe I'm being too harsh. It's hard to follow performances like Jessica Lange's, I admit. But something felt off.
And let's be honest, that singing scene? It was a little... much. Did we need a creepy Victorian ghost to belt out a tune?
"Some actors just fit better than others, right?"
I know, I know, American Horror Story is all about the over-the-top. But even for AHS, it felt a bit jarring.
But hey, that's just my opinion! Maybe you were completely captivated by Mordrake. And that's totally valid. We can still be friends!
Overall: Still Freaking Fantastic
Despite my Wes Bentley reservations, episode two was great. The cast chemistry? Undeniable. The costumes? Impeccable. The sheer weirdness? Off the charts.
Freak Show continues to deliver the unsettling, macabre, and strangely beautiful content. Exactly what we expect, and secretly crave.
So, let's keep watching! And arguing about whether or not Wes Bentley's performance was truly terrifying. It is American Horror Story after all. We should have something to talk about.
