Okay, hear me out. I have a slightly crazy, maybe even controversial, opinion.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is Basically Attack on Titan.
Don’t click away yet! I promise I'm not totally losing it. Let's break this down.
The Walls
First, think about it. What's the first thing you do in Animal Crossing? You build a house, right? Then you get fences. Fences are just tiny, adorable walls!
In Attack on Titan, humanity hides behind massive walls to protect themselves from Titans. In Animal Crossing, you're hiding behind fences... from... wasps? Okay, maybe not as epic. But still, walls are walls!
The walls of Animal Crossing protect you from the everyday dangers of island life.
The Villagers are Tiny Titans (Kind Of)
Okay, this is where it gets a little weird. But just a little! Hear me out.
The villagers in Animal Crossing? They're always watching you. Always. Staring. Following. It's a little intense.
Like, have you ever tried to just relax by the beach? And Bam! Rosie is right there, just... staring. Smiling. Judging?
They’re not trying to eat you, thankfully. But they’re definitely demanding your attention and resources. Sounds Titan-ish to me!
The Constant Resource Gathering is Titan Hunting
What do you spend most of your time doing in Animal Crossing? Chopping trees. Mining rocks. Catching bugs. Fishing.
That's basically like the Survey Corps constantly gathering intel and supplies to fight the Titans! You are constantly looking for resources to survive.
You need iron nuggets? You gotta smash some rocks. Titans threatening humanity? You gotta gear up and fight!
Isabelle is Your Commander Erwin
Isabelle. Sweet, adorable Isabelle. She's always there, giving you information, managing the town, and generally being the best darn secretary a mayor could ask for.
Sound familiar? She sacrifices her own time and sanity for the betterment of the island. Isabelle is our fearless leader.
She even makes announcements about lost items! It's basically her version of inspiring speeches before a big operation.
Crafting is Just ODM Gear Maintenance
You're constantly crafting tools in Animal Crossing. Axes break. Nets snap. Fishing rods get lost. It's a whole ordeal.
That’s just like maintaining your ODM gear in Attack on Titan! Always repairing, always upgrading, always preparing for the next big... bug catching tournament?
Crafting tables are just a less intimidating version of the Survey Corps' workshop.
The Overall Sense of Existential Dread
Okay, this is the real deep cut. Think about the underlying themes of both games.
In Attack on Titan, humanity is trapped, facing constant threats, and struggling to find meaning in a cruel world. Deep stuff.
And in Animal Crossing? You're trapped on an island, constantly working to pay off debt to a capitalist raccoon, and surrounded by neighbors who may or may not be judging your interior decorating choices. Also deep stuff.
The existential dread is palpable in both. You're working hard, but for what? To survive. And maybe, just maybe, to find a cute new villager to obsess over.
So, am I saying Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a perfect recreation of Attack on Titan? No, of course not. But are there some hilarious parallels? Absolutely!
Maybe it's just me. Maybe I need a break from both games. But next time you're building a fence in Animal Crossing, just think about the walls of Maria, Rose, and Sina. And maybe craft an extra-strong axe, just in case those villagers get any bigger.
