Okay, let's be real. Who doesn't love an anime where the main character (MC) gets trained by a total legend?
The Legend's Toughest Student
It's a classic trope, right? Some nobody kid gets picked up by the strongest person ever. Suddenly, they're on the path to greatness. It's like the anime equivalent of winning the lottery and getting a personal trainer who's a superhero.
Think about it. Goku had Master Roshi. Naruto had Jiraiya. Even Tanjiro had Urokodaki! These legends see the potential in the MC, even when no one else does.
Why We're Hooked
We all love seeing someone overcome obstacles. We especially love when they have a cool mentor! It's inspiring, and let’s face it, a little bit wish fulfillment. Imagine if you got trained by a legendary anime character. What would you choose?
Plus, the training montages are always epic! Sweaty foreheads, gritted teeth, and a catchy soundtrack. They always become stronger.
Unpopular Opinion Time?
But here’s where I might lose some of you. I'm starting to think some legendary mentors are actually...holding their students back?
Hear me out! Sometimes, these "legends" are stuck in their old ways. They teach outdated techniques or have a rigid mindset. The MC ends up having to unlearn some of that stuff later. It's like learning to drive stick shift in a world of self-driving cars.
Take Master Roshi for example. Great guy, but...pervy old man. I love Dragon Ball but that's his biggest flaw. Did Goku really need *that* much turtle training? I'm just asking the question.
And let's not forget the "tough love" approach some legends take. Sure, pushing someone is good. But constantly belittling them? Seems a bit counterproductive. Like, chill, dude. They're trying!
The New Generation of Legends
I appreciate it when anime subverts this trope. When the MC surpasses their mentor in unexpected ways. Or when the mentor learns something from the student. That's character development gold right there!
It's about growth and change. Legends are important, but they shouldn't stifle innovation. Sometimes, the student knows best. Or at least, knows what works for *them*.
So, yeah, I still love the "trained by a legend" anime. But maybe we need some new legends. Legends who are a little less...legendary, and a little more...supportive. And, you know, maybe a little less pervy. Just a thought.
What do you think? Am I crazy? Are legendary mentors always awesome? Or do some need a serious attitude adjustment?
Let me know your thoughts! I'm genuinely curious to hear what everyone else thinks about these iconic anime mentor-student relationships.
