Okay, let's talk anime. Specifically, anime where the "good guy" is, well, kinda the bad guy. You know, the ones where you're low-key rooting for chaos?
I know, I know. We’re supposed to cheer for the heroes. But sometimes, the villains are just…more interesting.
When 'Justice' Looks a Little Shady
Think about Light Yagami from Death Note. He wants to rid the world of crime. Noble, right? Then he gets a magical notebook that lets him kill anyone whose name he writes in it. Hmm...
Suddenly, he's playing judge, jury, and executioner. And it's *fascinating* to watch him slowly descend into a god complex. Don't lie, you were at least a little bit on his side at the beginning.
The "Ends Justify the Means" Argument
This is where things get tricky. Does wiping out all criminals make the world a better place, even if it means sacrificing individual rights? Light seems to think so!
He believes he is creating a better world! A world free of crime! But at what cost?
It's a slippery slope. And a very entertaining one to watch, let’s be honest.
More Morally Grey Protagonists, Please!
Then there's Code Geass. Lelouch Lamperouge is fighting a corrupt empire. Sounds heroic, doesn't it?
Except he's also using mind control powers and manipulation to achieve his goals. He uses people. He lies. He breaks eggs to make an omelet, and that omelet is world peace...maybe.
Again, you find yourself questioning your own morals. Am I bad person for liking this character?
Why We Secretly Love the Villain Protagonist
Maybe it’s because they’re complex. Maybe it’s because they dare to do what we wouldn’t. Maybe it's because they're just plain cool.
Good guys are often predictable. Villain protagonists? They keep you on your toes! You never know what they're going to do next.
They make mistakes. They are flawed. They sometimes lose. Which make them a great deal more interesting!
Unpopular Opinion: Sometimes, Bad is Good
I’m not saying we should all go out and become supervillains. (Please don't.)
But I *am* saying that there's something undeniably appealing about a character who embraces their dark side, especially if it's done with style.
It's thought-provoking. It's exciting. And sometimes, it's just more fun!
So, next time you're looking for an anime, consider one where the main character might just be the villain. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy it.
Don’t @ me.
