Okay, let’s talk Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. Specifically, Episode 6 of series 1. The one where they’re still in Germany. Remember that? It feels like ages ago, doesn't it?
I know, I know. Everyone loves the whole series. It’s a classic. But hear me out. I have some thoughts about episode 6. Possibly unpopular thoughts.
The One With the… Bricks
So, they’re still building that house. It’s cold. And they're bricking up the place.
Honestly, it feels like this episode is mostly just…bricks. Lots and lots of bricks.
More Bricks Than Banter?
Look, I love the lads. Dennis, Oz, Neville, Bomber, Wayne, Barry and of course Moxey! I do. But sometimes, even their banter can’t save an episode that feels a bit… sluggish.
Is it just me, or is this episode a bit slow? Less “hilarious mishap” and more “slightly damp bricklaying”?
Don’t get me wrong, there are funny moments. Oz’s antics are always good for a laugh. And Dennis trying to keep everyone in line is comedy gold.
The *Other* Stuff
There's Wayne and Christa. Their romance is...interesting. It is an acquired taste.
It highlights the cultural differences. It's a bit awkward to watch at times. Anyone else agree?
And there is the classic Neville wanting to go home. Bless him! We all feel like that sometimes, right? Work is far, far away.
Bomber's Big Idea (That Wasn't)
Then there's Bomber trying to get one over on Herr Grunwald. His plan is as daft as he is lovable!
It usually ends in disaster. Mostly hilarious, self-inflicted disaster.
I find Bomber like a puppy. Energetic and has a simple mind.
My Controversial Opinion
Here it comes. Deep breath. Are you ready? I think Episode 6 is the weakest of the first series. There, I said it.
I know, I know. It's still Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. It’s still better than most things on TV. I am not saying it is the worst.
But compared to the episodes before and after? It just doesn’t quite have the same spark. The jokes don’t land as well. The plot feels a bit thin.
Maybe I'm just in a minority. A grumpy minority who needs more explosions and fewer bricks. But I stand by it!
It's Still Good, Though!
Okay, okay, I’m being harsh. Even a “weak” episode of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet is still brilliant. It’s the characters that make it. We love them.
It's about ordinary blokes. They are trying to make a living in a foreign land. Even when they're just laying bricks.
The chemistry between the actors is amazing. You really believe they're mates. Even when they're winding each other up!
It is not a bad episode. I am being picky. I enjoy the whole series. There's just something about this one. It is the one that I am less keen on.
So, what do you think? Am I completely wrong? Is Episode 6 secretly a masterpiece? Or do you agree that it's the slightly less shiny brick in an otherwise perfect wall? Let me know!
