Okay, let's talk about crossword puzzles. Specifically, one pesky clue: "Best Actress Winner For The Farmer's Daughter."
We all know the answer, right? Loretta Young. It's practically crossword code.
But... Hear Me Out!
I'm about to say something controversial. Something that might get me banned from crossword circles. I have a different opinion about this "obvious" answer.
Is Loretta Young *really* the best actress in that movie?
Now, don't get me wrong. She's charming. She's graceful. She definitely nails the whole 'farmer's daughter turned politician' thing. But I think there are a couple of other performers who outshone her, in my humble opinion.
My Unpopular Opinion: The Supporting Cast Deserves Some Love
Let's consider the brilliance of Ethel Barrymore. Her portrayal of Agatha Morley is masterful. A little harsh? Perhaps. But unforgettable? Absolutely.
Barrymore brings a gravitas and wit to the role that elevates the entire film. She's the perfect foil to Young's more naive character.
And what about Joseph Calleia as Clancy? He provided the muscle and was funny at the same time.
He was a subtle actor too. Subtle acting is hard to come by.
Seriously, think about their scenes. Every line delivery, every facial expression is spot on.
Calleia was the perfect fit for this movie. I can't imagine anyone else playing Clancy.
They add layers of complexity and humor. Layers the movie desperately needs!
The "Best" Is Subjective, Isn't It?
Look, I understand that Loretta Young won the Oscar. And she's wonderful. Really!
But awards don't always tell the whole story. Sometimes, the supporting players are the ones who truly shine. Those who truly contribute to making a movie something special.
And sometimes, they are overlooked by the Academy.
I think a lot of it has to do with visibility. A lead role simply gets more screen time, and thus more opportunity for acclaim.
I also think our perception is swayed by the fact that Young *won*. We see it as validation.
Is it a crime to think that maybe, just maybe, someone else was even *better*? Even more memorable?
I don't think so! Art is subjective. Taste is subjective.
I think you have to look at the entire performance, not just the main character, to evaluate the best actress.
So, next time you're doing that crossword and see "Best Actress Winner For The Farmer's Daughter," go ahead and fill in Loretta Young. It's the right answer.
But in your heart, maybe whisper a little "Thank you, Ethel!" or "Good job, Joseph!".
Because, secretly, they deserve some credit, too. Even if only in our own little crossword-loving world.
Let's appreciate those performances a little more.
Maybe I am wrong, but I still stand by my opinion that the supporting actresses could have had a chance.
Do you agree? Or am I totally off my rocker?
Either way, happy puzzling!
