Okay, let's talk about Bungou Stray Dogs Season 2 Episode 12. "Darkness, Act 2". A lot of people seem to love this episode. I'm here to say… I think it's a little overrated.
Don't get me wrong, it's not *bad*. But is it the pinnacle of the season? I'm not so sure. Prepare for some mildly controversial opinions!
The Backstory We Needed (But Did We?)
We get a big chunk of Dazai's past. It's dark. It's angsty. He was with the Port Mafia. We knew all of that already!
We find out his tragic backstory involving Odasaku. It sets up Dazai's present motivations. But does it make him *that* much more compelling?
The dramatic music swells. The rain pours. The characters stare dramatically into the middle distance. It all feels a little… try-hard?
Odasaku: Overhyped Martyr?
Now, before you grab your pitchforks, hear me out. Everyone loves Odasaku. He’s a saintly figure in a world of moral greyness. Fine.
But is he *that* interesting? He wants to write. He cares about kids. He tells Dazai to be a good person. Solid advice, sure.
His death is undeniably sad. Still, something about the universal adoration feels a bit much to me. Is he just a plot device to traumatize Dazai?
Where's the Levity?
Bungou Stray Dogs usually balances the darkness with humor. This episode is almost entirely devoid of it. It's just grim and serious.
While I appreciate the tonal shift, I missed the usual banter. Even Dazai's usual sardonic wit is toned down. It felt a little… sterile.
Where are Atsushi's adorable freak-outs? Where's Kunikida's exasperation? Give me something to chuckle at between all the tragic monologues!
The Action? Kinda Underwhelming
For an episode with so much build-up, the action felt surprisingly… brief. Odasaku fights Gide. It's a decent fight, but not spectacular.
We've seen better fight choreography in other episodes. It's all about the emotional impact. And while impactful, its not groundbreaking.
Maybe I'm just a sucker for flashy abilities. This episode relies more on character drama than superpowers clashing.
The Real Star: The Foreshadowing
Okay, I will admit this episode does one thing really well. It sets up future plot points. Dazai's decision to join the Armed Detective Agency. Got it.
Ango Sakaguchi's involvement with everything. Interesting… very interesting. The hints about the true nature of the book ability? Intriguing.
The episode does a good job of planting seeds that will blossom later. But is that enough to make it a top-tier episode? I'm still not convinced.
In Conclusion: Good, Not Great
So, there you have it. My (possibly) unpopular opinion on Bungou Stray Dogs Season 2 Episode 12. It's a good episode. Definitely.
But I don't think it deserves all the hype. Maybe I just prefer my Bungou Stray Dogs with a bit more absurdity.
Let me know if you agree or disagree! I'm ready for your arguments (but please be nice!).
