Okay, let's talk Rise of the Footsoldier 2. You know, the one with more geezers than a bingo hall on a Tuesday?
The Usual Suspects...And My Unpopular Opinion
We've got Terry Stone back, of course. He's like the glue holding this whole crazy, violent party together. But here's where I might ruffle some feathers.
I think Ricci Harnett as Carlton Leach? Bit much, isn't it? He's alright, I suppose. Just not my cup of tea.
Don't get me wrong, he commits. But sometimes it feels like he's trying to be hard. You know?
New Faces, Same Chaos
Then we have some fresh blood thrown into the mix. Some lads looking to make a name for themselves.
I always thought Billy Murray added something great. He has that proper hard man look that can carry a scene. He's a proper legend, right?
I was never convinced by Neil Maskell, though. He does a fine job, obviously. I just never warmed to his character.
Nicholas Brendon, who doesn't love him?! I thought that he brings a different vibe, which is nice.
The Real Stars? The Supporting Cast
Let's be honest, some of the best bits are the smaller roles. The blokes with one line and a menacing glare.
Those faces you recognise from somewhere...probably another gangster flick! They really make the world believable.
They bring that grit. That proper "Essex" feel. I like that, makes me smile.
It’s all about the faces, the accents and the dodgy haircuts!
Carlton Leach: Hero or Villain?
This is the question that always gets debated! Is Carlton Leach a lovable rogue or just a nasty piece of work?
The film definitely tries to make him sympathetic. Shows his vulnerable side and his loyalty to his mates.
But let’s be real, he does some seriously questionable stuff! My hot take? He's both. Complicated.
I think Ricci Harnett's portrayal struggles with showing both sides. It feels like he leans too heavily into one or the other, at times. Maybe that is just me.
Overall Verdict (And More Controversy!)
Rise of the Footsoldier 2 is a ride. It's violent, it's sweary, and it's definitely not for the faint of heart.
It's not winning any awards for acting. But it does capture a certain time and place. The underbelly of the UK.
And this may sound crazy but I’m not sure it’s as good as the hype! I think people remember it fondly from their youth.
It’s basically Guy Ritchie, but with even more swearing and violence! And maybe slightly less charm. I said it!
However, the character of Carlton Leach is one of the great anti-heroes in the British movies. You have to respect that.
So, grab a few cans, stick it on, and enjoy the chaos. Just don't take it too seriously, alright?
And please don’t come at me for my Carlton Leach opinions! We can all have different tastes, can’t we?
