Okay, let's talk about The Remains of the Day. Beautiful movie, right? Sad, yes. But the cast? Oh, the cast. We're diving in, and I might have some controversial opinions.
The Power Players
First up, Anthony Hopkins as Mr. Stevens. The man is a legend. But, and this is a big but, sometimes I wanted to shake him! So stiff! So…British?
And then there’s Emma Thompson as Miss Kenton. What a queen. She really showed all the emotions, she acted beautifully.
It's hard to imagine anyone else in those roles, isn't it? But let's be honest, the supporting cast is where things get…interesting.
Unsung (or Under-appreciated?) Heroes
Now, hear me out: Hugh Grant as Cardinal? He was there. Did he need to be? I don’t know. It felt like they just wanted to slap a famous face in there.
He delivered the lines, sure. But I feel like literally any other British actor could have played the role.
And Christopher Reeve as Congressman Jack Lewis? He was fine. Just…fine. Maybe it's just me, but it felt a little like stunt casting.
He's Superman! I'm distracted! Though seeing him out of his tights was interesting.
Okay, unpopular opinion time: James Fox as Lord Darlington. He embodied that clueless, upper-class twit perfectly.
Too perfectly, perhaps? I just wanted to yell at him, which I guess means he did a good job. But still! Argh!
And then there’s Paula Jacobs. She was good as Mrs. Bain, the housekeeper, but her role was so small, she didn't have a lot of screen time to act.
And let's not forget the younger versions! These actors really shone through.

Did anyone else think the younger versions of Stevens and Kenton were better than the older ones?
Just kidding! But I did enjoy seeing the flashback and watching them interact. Especially since we know where it all goes.
The Verdict
Overall, The Remains of the Day has a great cast. Flaws and all. Everyone played their part and contributed to a story.
Hopkins and Thompson are brilliant, even if Hopkins makes me want to scream sometimes.
Maybe the supporting cast wasn't always perfect. But they helped create this emotional drama about a butler's quiet life and the decisions that lead to deep regrets.
