Everyone raves about how profound it is. How it makes you think about your past relationships. And whether you'd erase them if you could. But honestly?
I'd probably erase a few. Like, without hesitation.

We've all had those relationships. The ones that were just... messy. The ones that left you emotionally drained and questioning your life choices.
Wouldn't a little memory wipe be nice? Just poof! Gone. No more cringey flashbacks at 3 AM.
I get the romantic ideal of learning from your mistakes. Growing stronger from heartbreak. Blah, blah, blah.
But sometimes, you just want to forget that time you wore Crocs on a date. Or accidentally called your boyfriend by your ex's name. Or thought that ordering escargot was a good idea.
The movie argues that even the bad memories make you who you are. And that's probably true. But sometimes, who you are is someone who wants to forget that escargot incident. And that's okay too.
Maybe I'm just a shallow, forgetful person. I fully admit it's a possibility.
The Plot Thickens (or Doesn't, Really)
The whole memory-erasing technology thing? Cool concept. A little convoluted in execution. All those dream sequences blur together after a while.
I spent half the movie trying to figure out what was real and what wasn't. By the end, I mostly just felt confused and a little sleepy.
And while I appreciate the existential angst, sometimes I just want a movie with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Is that too much to ask?
Plus, let's be honest, that lacuna, inc. office looked pretty depressing. Who wants to go there to get their brain scrambled?

But I'm just saying... maybe Eternal Sunshine isn't the be-all and end-all of romantic dramas. Maybe it's just a slightly quirky, slightly confusing, ultimately okay movie.
Perhaps I just connect to the movie on a different level. I mean, the desire to erase some painful memories? It's universal! But I don't think you need a sci-fi movie to feel that way.
