Let's talk about Fly Me To The Moon. You know, that classic? The one Frank Sinatra made famous?
Specifically, let's talk about the piano version. The super, duper, beginner-friendly one.
Here's my unpopular opinion: It's... overplayed.
It's Everywhere!
Seriously! You walk into a cafe. There it is. Someone's uncle whips out his keyboard at a family gathering? Fly Me To The Moon. Guaranteed.
Wedding reception? Yep, it's on the playlist. Elevator music? Probably a slightly off-key rendition.
Don't get me wrong, it's a pretty song! But it's become the white bread of piano tunes, hasn't it?
But It's So Easy!
I know, I know. That's the point! It's like the gateway drug to the piano world.
A few chords, a simple melody. Boom! Instant gratification. You're basically Sinatra's backup pianist.
And I respect that! But perhaps TOO many people are finding that gateway?
It's gotten to the point where hearing those first few notes triggers a mild existential crisis.
"Oh no," I think. "Not again! Is there no escape from the moon-bound serenade?"
The Charm Wears Off... Eventually
Remember when you first learned it? The thrill! The accomplishment! You could actually play a real song!
But after the 50th rendition, performed with varying degrees of skill, the charm starts to fade.
It becomes… background noise. A musical wallpaper. A lunar-themed earworm that just won't quit.
Other Songs Exist!
I'm not saying ban Fly Me To The Moon. Heavens, no! It's a classic for a reason.
But maybe, just maybe, we could encourage aspiring pianists to explore other options?
The piano repertoire is vast! There are countless beautiful, relatively easy songs out there.
Let's branch out! Discover new melodies! Save our ears from eternal moon orbits!
Maybe learn a little Debussy? Or even a jazzy blues number? Anything but Fly Me To The Moon... for a little while, at least.
Think of it! We could create a world with a slightly more diverse musical landscape.
A world where hearing piano music doesn't automatically induce a sigh of weary recognition.
Okay, maybe I'm being dramatic. But a little less "moon," a little more "earthly delight," sounds good to me!
It's Still a Good Song, Though...
Look, I'm not a monster. Fly Me To The Moon is a great song.
It's romantic, it's catchy, and it's undeniably fun to play (the first few times, at least).
But maybe, just maybe, it's time to give it a little break? Put it on the shelf for a while?
Let its lunar dust settle. Let our ears recover. And then, maybe, we can rediscover its magic all over again.
Until then, I'll be hiding behind my couch whenever I hear those opening chords. Don't tell anyone!
Maybe I will start to learn Debussy instead of complaining.
