My iPhone swears it knows my Gmail login. Like, really swears. It pops up the autofill with such confidence! But is it right? Almost never.

It’s some old, long-forgotten Gmail username I used back when frosted tips were cool. We're talking circa 2004.

I just want to scream, "That's not my email anymore, phone! I evolved! Get with the program!"

But honestly, remembering a million complex, unique passwords is a full-time job. A job I am not applying for.

I prefer a tiered system. Bank accounts get the Fort Knox treatment. Newsletters get the "eh, whatever" password.

The Autofill Conspiracy

I have a theory. A conspiracy theory, perhaps. I think the autofill feature is secretly a time-wasting device.

It looks like it's saving you time. But really, it's leading you down a rabbit hole of incorrect usernames and forgotten passwords.

Then you have to click "Forgot Password" three times, answer security questions about your childhood pet (Fluffy the hamster, RIP), and finally get a reset link.

It's faster to just type it in yourself. I said it.

Maybe I’m being dramatic. But sometimes, I feel like I spend half my life battling my phone’s overzealous autofill.

The next time your iPhone offers you a Gmail login from the early 2000s, just smile.
