Is It Just Me, Or Is *The Great*...Not *That* Great Anymore?
Okay, okay, before you grab your pitchforks, hear me out. We all loved The Great, right? That first season was like a shot of vodka mixed with historical satire. Glorious!
But how many seasons are there, *really*? I mean, officially? Three. But unofficially? In my heart? Maybe one and a half.
Season One: A Masterpiece of Madcap Mayhem
Season one. Pure genius. Elle Fanning as Catherine? Nicholas Hoult nailing the deliciously awful Peter? Chefs kiss. The plot was tight, the jokes landed, and the costumes? Divine.
It had that perfect blend of historical accuracy (ish) and utter ridiculousness. We were all hooked. We needed more!
Season Two: Still Funny, But Showing Cracks?
Season two kept the spirit alive. Catherine trying to actually rule Russia was interesting. Seeing her navigate court intrigues and Peter's shenanigans was still pretty entertaining.
But…did anyone else feel like the jokes were starting to feel a little…forced? The magic was ever so slightly fading. It felt like the writers were working harder to be funny.
Season Three: Jumping the Shark, Russian Style?
And then there's season three. This is where I might lose some of you. But honestly, it felt like The Great had lost its way. The stakes were high, but the fun? Not so much.
Peter's death? Heartbreaking, sure. But did it really serve the story, or just shock value? The plot became increasingly convoluted.
Suddenly there was plot twist after plot twist. It felt like they crammed three season worth of material into one and a half. I'm not sure I can keep up.
So, Back to the Original Question: How Many Seasons?
Officially, as I said, there are three. But in my humble (and possibly unpopular) opinion, The Great peaked at season one. Season two had some great moments, but season three? Let's just say I won't be rewatching it anytime soon.
Maybe it's better to remember Catherine's initial rise to power, that naive optimism colliding with the brutal reality of 18th-century Russia. Rather than...whatever happened in season three.
Think of it like this: The Great was a delicious pastry. Season one was the perfect bite. Season two was still tasty, but maybe a bit too sweet. Season three? The pastry fell on the floor and someone tried to salvage it with extra frosting and sprinkles.
Is it Just Me?
Am I alone in this? Did anyone else feel the same way? Or am I just being a grumpy gus who can't appreciate the later seasons? It could be that it is just not for me.
Let me know what you think! Maybe you loved season three. Maybe you think I'm completely off base. I'm ready for the debate!
At least we can all agree that The Great gave us some amazing memes and quotes. And for that, I will always be grateful. Now, if you will excuse me, I am off to rewatch season one.
