The Power of Words
Forget drawing! Think writing! Describe your character in detail. Is Brenda the Barbarian tall and imposing, or surprisingly short and scrappy?
Maybe Professor Quentin Quibble has a perpetually bewildered expression and glasses perpetually sliding down his nose. Think about their personality, their quirks, their backstory. The more you know, the better!

Borrow elements that resonate with you, and then twist them to make them your own. Maybe your character has Sherlock Holmes's deductive skills, but a crippling fear of pigeons.
Analyze what makes those characters memorable and see how you can adapt those principles to your own creation.
Collaborate!
This is a big one! Find an artist friend who can bring your character to life visually. Explain your character in detail, show them your mood board, share your backstory.
Be open to their suggestions, but don't be afraid to stand your ground if they're veering too far from your vision. It's a collaboration, after all.
