Okay, let's talk I Know This Much Is True. The HBO miniseries starring Mark Ruffalo? Yeah, that one.
It's a heavy show. Like, seriously heavy. Twins, trauma, mental illness… it's a lot.
But here's my possibly unpopular opinion. Lean in close.
Dr. Patel: A Voice of Reason (Maybe?)
Dr. Patel, the psychiatrist played by Archie Panjabi, is… kind of the most relatable character? I said it.
Everyone else is steeped in, let's be honest, misery. She's just trying to help.
And let's be real, sometimes her patience must have been thinner than paper.
She Actually Listens
Dominick Birdsey, bless his heart, is a lot. He yells. He's angry. He's grieving.
Dr. Patel actually *listens* to him. Even when he’s being, well, difficult. That takes skill.
I mean, I've been to doctors where I felt like they were already writing the prescription before I even sat down.
Not Dr. Patel. She seems genuinely interested. Maybe a little too interested in the history of his trauma, but interested nonetheless.
She pushes back. She challenges him. She suggests therapy might be useful. Radical ideas, I know!
Is She Perfect? Absolutely Not.
Look, I'm not saying Dr. Patel is some saint. She has her moments. She is a psychiatrist.
Questionable ethics happen in almost every medical drama. It's basically a plot device now.
But compared to the other characters drowning in the Birdsey family drama? She's practically floating.
"Sometimes, you just have to acknowledge the reality of things." - Dr. Patel (probably paraphrased)
Let's Be Honest: We'd All Benefit from a Dr. Patel
Think about it. Someone who listens. Someone who's (mostly) objective. Someone who isn’t afraid to tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.
We all need that. Especially when we're dealing with… well, life.
I'm not saying therapy is a magic bullet. But having someone to talk to, someone who's trained to listen? Sounds pretty good.
Imagine trying to navigate the Birdsey family without professional help! It would be a disaster.
So, yeah, I'm Team Dr. Patel. Maybe she's not perfect. Maybe she's a little bit of a plot device. But in a sea of dysfunction, she's a lighthouse.
And honestly? I'd trust her with my secrets way before I'd trust Dominick with a sharp object. Just saying.
Don't get me wrong, Mark Ruffalo is amazing. He is an extremely good actor.
But in a show about mental health, it's nice to see a character who's actually… healthy-ish.
Okay, that’s all. What's your take? Am I crazy? Probably. But hey, at least I'm not a Birdsey.
And if you see Archie Panjabi, tell her I said "Thank you for bringing some sanity to that mess."
