The Problem With All the Information
Look, I appreciate the in-depth reporting. I really do. But after an hour of hearing about how the world is slowly (or maybe quickly?) collapsing, I just want to order pizza and hide under a blanket.
Am I the only one? Does anyone else feel like they need a therapy session after watching Last Week Tonight?
Maybe that's the point. Maybe John Oliver is trying to force us into action by sheer force of existential dread. If so, well played, sir. I'm ordering that pizza.
Let's Be Honest, It's Often Hilarious... Until It Isn't
I will admit, the show is funny. Brutally, sometimes darkly, funny. The writing is sharp, the jokes are clever, and John Oliver's delivery is impeccable.
But then you remember that he's making jokes about actual suffering, and the laughter catches in your throat. It's a weird feeling. A very 2023 feeling.
He definitely has some really strong takes. And when he's right, he's right. It's like, "Yes, John Oliver, tell them! Tell them how ridiculous this is!"
My Unpopular Opinion: It's Too Much
Here's my unpopular opinion: Last Week Tonight can be overwhelming. Sometimes, less is more.
I get it, there's a lot of bad stuff happening. We all know. We're living through it! Do we really need a detailed, comedic breakdown every week? I'm not sure.
Maybe I just need a break from the doom and gloom. Maybe I should just stick to cat videos for a while. Is that so wrong?
The Segment You (Probably) Already Forgot
Remember that segment about... whatever it was? The one with the slightly offensive puppet? Yeah, me neither.
Look, I'm not saying the topics aren't important. I'm just saying my brain has limited storage space, and it's mostly filled with song lyrics and old memes.
Maybe I'm just not smart enough to fully appreciate the brilliance of Last Week Tonight. Or maybe I'm just desperately trying to maintain some semblance of optimism in a world that seems determined to crush it.
Still Watching, Though
Despite my complaints, I'll probably watch the next episode. I'm a glutton for punishment, apparently. Or maybe I just have a morbid curiosity about what fresh hell John Oliver will uncover next.
