Confessions of an SVU Fan: "Complicated" Thoughts on Season 19, Episode 5
Okay, listen up, fellow Law & Order: SVU addicts! Let's talk about "Complicated" (Season 19, Episode 5). It aired back in 2017. I'm ready to spill my slightly controversial thoughts.
First off, the case itself? A teenage girl accused of killing her foster mother. Classic SVU territory, right?
The Plot Thickens (Or Does It?)
The episode dives deep into the foster care system. There's definitely some messed-up stuff happening. We get the usual twists and turns.
But honestly, did anyone else find the "twists" a bit… predictable? It's like, okay, we get it. Everyone's hiding something.
I mean, foster care issues are serious and important. But, the story's execution felt a little heavy-handed. Maybe I'm just cynical.
Olivia Benson, Our Forever Queen
Let's be real, we're all watching for Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay). She's the heart and soul of the show. Even in a so-so episode, she brings the goods.
Her empathy is off the charts! Seeing her connect with the troubled teenager was heartwarming. Honestly, she deserves a medal.
I will always root for Benson. Always!
Rollins' Development... A Tad Rushed?
Detective Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) has always been a compelling character. I appreciate her growth throughout the seasons. But, this episode felt like they crammed too much of her personal struggles in.
She was struggling with gambling addiction and motherhood! It felt a bit overwhelming within a single episode. Maybe spread it out a bit, writers?
Don't get me wrong, I love Rollins! Just thought it felt crammed.
My Unpopular Opinion?
Okay, brace yourselves. Here it comes: This episode is…overrated. I said it!
Compared to some of the truly iconic SVU episodes, "Complicated" just doesn't quite hit the same. It's watchable, sure. But not exactly re-watchable, in my opinion.
Don't @ me! I still love SVU with all my heart.
The Supporting Cast: Meh
The guest stars? They were fine. But no one really blew me away.
No memorable performances. No standout moments.
Did I even remember their names? Nope!
The Verdict: Complicated Feelings
So, yeah, "Complicated" gives me complicated feelings. It's SVU, so it's automatically decent.
But compared to the highs of the series, it lands somewhere in the middle. An average episode, perhaps?
"In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: The police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders."
Let's be honest: Even a "meh" SVU episode is better than most shows on TV. I'll still be watching every week! Benson will keep me coming back!
