SVU is back! Let's talk Season 24, Episode 1, "Gimme Shelter – Part One."
Okay, folks, Law & Order: SVU returned. And let's just say, it didn't exactly ease us back in. Murder, mystery, and a whole lot of awkward reunions were on the menu.
Benson's Back (but is she happy?)
First, Olivia Benson is still at the helm. She's still navigating the NYC streets. This time, though, she seems...tired?
Is it just me, or is she a little *too* understanding these days? Remember when she'd instantly grill suspects? Now, it's like she's running a therapy session.
Rollins and Carisi: Still Cute, Still Fighting
Rollins and Carisi are married! Finally! But the honeymoon phase seems to involve a lot of bickering. Is that just realistic marriage or TV drama?
I love them together, don't get me wrong. Their arguments are funny. I wish they would catch a break.
The Case: A bit too "ripped from the headlines"?
The episode involves a wealthy family. A young woman disappears. Secrets galore. Sound familiar?
Sometimes, these "inspired by true events" episodes feel a little *too* on the nose. Anyone else agree? The show needs to remember the power of original and complicated stories.
The Crossover: Is it necessary?
The episode was also a crossover with the original Law & Order and Law & Order: Organized Crime. Was it cool? Yes. Was it totally essential? Debatable.
It felt a little like, "Hey, look at us! We're all connected!" I missed the good old days of SVU being self contained. What is your thoughts?
Unpopular Opinion Time: Let's Talk About Style
Okay, prepare yourselves for a potentially controversial statement. Does anyone else think the lighting in SVU has gotten...darker? Like, literally?
I know, I know, it's supposed to be gritty. But sometimes, I feel like I need a flashlight to watch the show! Please, turn on the lights.
Fin's Still Got It (Thank Goodness)
Fin Tutuola remains the unsung hero. He delivers the deadpan zingers. The comedic relief we all need.
Seriously, can we get Fin his own spin-off where he solves crimes while dispensing wisdom? I'd watch that.
Overall Verdict?
“Gimme Shelter – Part One” was an okay start to the season. It set the stage for more drama.
But let's hope the rest of Season 24 brings back some of the old SVU magic. Maybe a little less darkness. Definitely more Fin.
What did you think? Let me know in the comments! Maybe you can convince me why I'm wrong.
"In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: The police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders. These are their stories."
