Okay, let's talk about My Hero Academia. Specifically, season 1, episode 1. Prepare yourselves, this might get controversial.
The One Where Deku Cries A Lot
We all know it. It's basically the "origin story" starter pack. Young Izuku Midoriya, aka Deku, learns he's quirkless. Cue the waterworks.
I get it. It's sad. His dream is crushed. But honestly, did anyone else find the crying a little... much?
Don't get me wrong. I love Deku. He's adorable and determined. But the sheer volume of tears could probably fill a swimming pool.
All Might's Grand Entrance (and Exit?)
Then comes All Might! The Symbol of Peace! He saves Deku from the Sludge Villain. Talk about a dramatic entrance.
He's super buff, super cool, and says "I am here!" iconic. But his appearance is a bit too brief.
And then, poof! Turns into a skinny, sickly version of himself. Talk about a letdown. Was that supposed to inspire hope?
The Sludge Villain: More Annoying Than Scary
Let's be real, the Sludge Villain is not exactly the most compelling villain. He's slimy, he's green, and he's... there.
He feels more like a plot device. Just there to get Deku involved and show how amazing All Might is. Mission accomplished, I guess.
Still, he’s not a particularly memorable antagonist. Sorry, Sludge Villain. Maybe try a better moisturizer?
Deku's "Heroic" Act (Maybe?)
Okay, this is where things get interesting. Deku, quirkless and all, runs in to save Kacchan (Bakugo) from the Sludge Villain. Impressive?
He throws his backpack at the villain's eye. I mean, it's something. Bravery?
Let's be honest, it wasn't the *most* effective plan. It's cute. And shows that desire to save people which is endearing.
The Setup for Greatness
Despite my playful criticisms, the episode does its job. It sets up the world of My Hero Academia. Quirks, heroes, villains – we get the gist.
We meet the main players. We see the power dynamics. And we're given a reason to root for Deku.
It's a classic origin story. Boy meets hero. Boy cries. Boy gets powers (spoiler alert!). It's a formula that works. Though I think Deku cries too much.
Unpopular Opinion Time
So, here's my unpopular opinion: The first episode is a little overrated. It's good, sure. But not amazing.
It’s a solid foundation, but the series really takes off after that. Later episodes get progressively better. It's worth the journey!
What do you think? Am I completely wrong? Did the first episode blow your mind? Let me know!
"Plus Ultra!" (Even if the first episode wasn't *quite* plus ultra).
