Okay, so picture this: you walk into work, grab your coffee, and settle in for another day of… emails. But then, BAM! There they are. Sitting. Right. Next. To. You.
I'm talking about my idol. The person whose blog I've devoured, whose podcast I religiously listen to, whose Twitter feed I stalk (in a totally normal, non-creepy way, I swear!).
First Encounters of the Awesome Kind
Remember that movie where someone meets their celebrity crush and instantly spills coffee all over them? Yeah, that almost happened. Luckily, I only managed a slightly awkward, "Hi," that squeaked out more than it should have.
But they smiled! They actually smiled! And said, "Hey, nice to meet you." It was like a scene from a rom-com, only instead of falling in love, I was just trying to remember how to breathe.
The Reality Check (and Continued Awesomeness)
So, now we share an office. It's both amazing and terrifying. On the one hand, I get to witness their brilliance firsthand.
They’re even more impressive in person. Their thought process? Amazing. The way they handle problems? Mind-blowing! It's like watching a masterclass in [insert idol’s profession here] every. single. day.
On the other hand, I’m constantly worried about saying something stupid. Or, worse, doing something embarrassing. Like accidentally sending them a meme meant for my cat.
Learning From the Best (Without Being a Total Annoyance)
I try to play it cool. I really do. I don’t want to be that person who’s constantly asking for advice or gushing about how much they admire them.
Instead, I observe. I listen. I try to absorb as much of their knowledge and wisdom as possible, like some kind of information sponge. I even started using some of their techniques on my daily work.
And guess what? It’s actually working! My work is improving, and I’m learning so much. Plus, we've even started having actual conversations about things other than work!
Unexpected Perks of Idol Proximity
Okay, confession time: sometimes, I listen in on their phone calls. Not in a creepy way (okay, maybe a little), but I learn so much just by hearing them interact with clients or colleagues. It's like getting free, insider knowledge!
And then there are the moments of pure, unadulterated joy. Like the time they laughed at my joke. Or when they asked for my opinion on something. It's validated my whole existence!
It also means they know me. They know I am not a cat, or robot, or just somebody trying to sell them something.
The Moral of the Story (and Why It's So Awesome)
Having your idol sitting next to you at work isn't always easy. There's the pressure, the self-doubt, and the constant fear of making a fool of yourself. I mean who would have thought I'll be working with her, that's insane!
But it's also an incredible opportunity. A chance to learn, grow, and be inspired by someone you truly admire. To see them as a real person, flaws and all, and realize that even idols are just human beings who work hard and strive to be their best.
So, if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, embrace it! Take a deep breath, be yourself (the best version of yourself, of course), and enjoy the ride. You never know what amazing things you might learn or what incredible connections you might make. And who knows, maybe someday someone will be writing an article about *you* being their idol!
