Ever stumbled upon a movie so bizarre and wonderful it sticks with you? That's One By One for me. It's a quirky, almost forgotten film starring the brilliant, and sadly missed, Rik Mayall.
Think Agatha Christie meets… a really, really awkward youth hostel. Seriously!
The Mystery Begins
The plot's simple enough on the surface: a group of disparate characters find themselves snowed in at a remote Welsh youth hostel. Then, one by one (see what they did there?), they start turning up dead.
Cue the amateur sleuthing! And plenty of opportunities for Rik Mayall to be… well, Rik Mayall.
Mayall at His Most Mayall-ish
Rik Mayall plays Vernon, a truly dreadful poet with a penchant for the dramatic. He fancies himself quite the ladies' man. Spoiler alert: he's not.
His performance is gloriously over-the-top. Think the energy of Bottom or The Young Ones, dialed down *just* enough to fit the slightly more serious tone (slightly being the key word!).
He's obnoxious, self-centered, and utterly hilarious. You can't help but love (or love to hate) him.
Beyond the Gags
While One By One is undoubtedly funny, it's more than just a collection of gags. There's a genuine mystery at its heart.
Who is the killer? Why are they targeting these specific people? The film keeps you guessing.
The claustrophobic setting adds to the tension. You really feel trapped along with the characters in that snowy hostel.
The Charm of the Underdog
One By One isn't a polished Hollywood blockbuster. It's got a certain… ramshackle charm.
It feels like a passion project, made with a lot of love and a healthy dose of British eccentricity.
The supporting cast is excellent, too. Each character brings their own quirks and secrets to the table.
A Forgotten Gem?
One By One never achieved massive mainstream success. It's more of a cult classic.
But that's part of what makes it so special. It feels like you've discovered a hidden gem.
It’s a reminder of Rik Mayall's incredible talent and his ability to make us laugh, even in the darkest of situations.
Why You Should Watch It
If you're a fan of Rik Mayall, British comedy, or just enjoy a good old-fashioned murder mystery with a twist, give One By One a watch.
Don't expect a cinematic masterpiece. But do expect a lot of laughs, some genuine suspense, and a healthy dose of wonderfully weird British humor.
It's the perfect movie for a cozy night in, preferably with a cup of tea and a roaring fire (unless you're snowed in, of course!). Just be sure to lock your doors... just in case.
Perhaps
Vernon's poetryis actually the killer weapon? You'll have to watch to find out! It's a fun ride!
