Okay, confession time. I watched the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on HBO from 2021. And… I have thoughts. Unpopular thoughts, maybe.
Don't get me wrong, I love music. I have eclectic taste. I'll bop along to anything from classical to, well, pretty much anything.
The Headliners
So, who was inducted in 2021? We had Tina Turner (again, but solo this time!), Carole King, and The Go-Go's.
Jay-Z was in there too! Plus, Foo Fighters. Pretty solid lineup, right?
Well, maybe. I mean, Tina Turner is an absolute legend. No arguments there.
The Snubs (In My Humble Opinion)
But here's where my unpopular opinion comes in. Did they get everyone right? Nope! And I will die on this hill!
Where was Kate Bush? Seriously, people! Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) has been a hit twice now! Someone get her nominated!
And what about Iron Maiden? I know, I know, it's the "Rock and Roll" Hall of Fame. But come on! They've influenced generations of musicians.
Another band I thought should be inducted was Devo. Their quirky, new wave sound has stood the test of time.
These snubs made me question the whole process. Does it really honor the most influential artists?
The Performances
Let’s talk about the performances. Carole King sounded great. And The Go-Go's brought the energy!
Foo Fighters were... Foo Fighters. Predictably awesome. I mean, Dave Grohl can do no wrong, right?
Taylor Swift showed up to sing Carole King's "Will You Love Me Tomorrow". I love Taylor but that’s where things got shaky for me.
The performances are always a mixed bag. Some are amazing tributes. Others... well, you just have to see them to believe them!
The Speeches
Speeches. Oh, the speeches. Some were heartfelt and inspiring. Others were… long. Very, very long.
You could feel the genuine emotion in some. The gratitude. The disbelief.
Then there were the rambling ones. You know, the ones that make you check your watch every two minutes. Still a blast though!
Overall Impression
So, what was my overall impression? Entertaining, for sure. But flawed.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is always going to be subjective. Someone's favorite band will always be left out.
But that's what makes it fun, right? Arguing about who deserves to be in and who doesn't. It's like a musical Thanksgiving dinner, full of opinions!
Maybe next year they'll get it all right. Or maybe I'll have a whole new list of snubs to complain about. Either way, I'll be watching.
Because even though it's flawed, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on HBO is a celebration of music. And that's something worth celebrating.
What are your thoughts? What about Kraftwerk? Or the Moody Blues? Or Bad Brains?
Let the debate begin! And please, be kind. Remember, it's all just rock and roll. (And opinions!)
