Okay, hear me out. Sora No Aosa Wo Shiru Hito Yo (Her Blue Sky). It's a mouthful, I know. But is it, dare I say...a bit overrated?
Don't get me wrong! The animation is gorgeous. Those backgrounds? Chef's kiss. Visually, it's stunning.
The Plot Thickens (or Does It?)
But the story… oh, the story. It's got a love triangle (or maybe a love square?). And, of course, a dash of time travel-ish weirdness.
Shinno, Akane, Aoi, and the ever-present ghost of Shinno's past self. It's a lot to unpack, right? Sometimes I felt like I needed a flowchart to keep track.
Aoi's crush on the older Shinno…awkward! Akane's lingering feelings…understandable, but still. Let's just say family dinners got a little tense in my imagination.
The Music Matters (Maybe Too Much?)
The music is...present. Very present. Is it good? Yes. Does it occasionally overshadow the actual plot? Also yes.
I felt like I was watching a beautifully animated music video at times. Which, hey, not necessarily a bad thing. But I came for the story, remember?
Shinno's musical ambitions. Key to the plot, sure. But did we need that many close-ups of his guitar?
Unpopular Opinion Alert!
Here it comes. Brace yourselves. I wasn't entirely invested. Gasp!
The emotional beats felt...manufactured? Like the movie was trying a bit too hard to make me cry. I'm not a robot, but I also need a little subtlety!
Maybe I'm just jaded. Maybe I've seen too many anime with complicated love triangles. But something just didn't quite click.
The "Feels" Factor
Everyone raves about the "feels" in this movie. And, look, I get it. There are sad moments. There's longing. There's a whole lot of blue.
But for me, the emotional impact was more of a gentle nudge than a punch to the gut. I wanted to be emotionally devastated! I wanted to weep!
Instead, I just thought, "Oh, that's...sad." And then I went to make a sandwich. Perhaps I lack the emotional depth required for this film.
So, What's the Verdict?
Her Blue Sky is a beautiful movie. A visually stunning experience with some interesting (if slightly convoluted) ideas.
But is it a masterpiece? For me, personally, no. It's a pretty good movie, but not something I'd rush to rewatch.
And that's okay! Not every movie has to be life-changing. Sometimes, a pretty animation and some decent music is enough. But let's not pretend it's the anime equivalent of world peace, alright?
So, there you have it. My (potentially) controversial opinion. Don't @ me. Just smile, nod, and maybe go watch something else. Or rewatch Her Blue Sky and prove me wrong. That's cool too.
Maybe I just prefer my anime with a little more giant robots. Or magical girls. Or talking cats. Just a thought.
