Yeah, I'm talking about Nic Nevin's absence. It hung over the whole episode like a medical drama-shaped raincloud. Everyone was sad. We were sad.
And while I totally get it, I have a confession. Maybe, just maybe, the show needed this. (Don't @ me!).
Grief, But Make It Dramatic (Of Course)
The episode itself? Standard The Resident fare. High stakes, medical mysteries, and enough emotional turmoil to fill an entire hospital wing. We saw Conrad doing his best daddy-o thing.
He was clearly heartbroken, but trying to be strong for Georgiana. You can see him struggling with the new normal. It was touching.
Then there was the whole mystery surrounding Nic's accident. Was it just a random event, or something more sinister? Dun dun DUUUUN!
Unpopular Opinion Time!
Here's where I might lose some of you. I found myself… intrigued. Hear me out!
Yes, Nic was an amazing character, and Emily VanCamp is a treasure. But her departure opens up a whole new realm of possibilities for the show.
Think about it. Conrad is now a single dad. He's got to navigate grief, career, and parenthood all at once. That's a goldmine for character development.
New Beginnings? Or Just More Chaos?
The show also hinted at some potential new romantic interests. Could we be seeing a new love interest for Conrad down the line? The possibilities are endless!
And let's not forget the other characters. Devon is stepping up. Bell is being...well, Bell. Everyone is evolving in their own way.
Sure, the episode was sad. I teared up, I'm not ashamed to admit it. But it also felt like a reset button for the show.

So, was The Resident Season 5, Episode 1 perfect? No, of course not. It was emotionally charged and heartbreaking at times.
