Okay, let's talk about The Righteous Gemstones Season 2 Episode 4. Specifically, the cast. Everyone seems to love them all. But does everyone *really*?
The Gemstone Family: Bless Their Hearts (and Wallets)
We've got John Goodman as Eli. He's the patriarch, wrestling with his past. I love Goodman, don't get me wrong. But sometimes, I think he just *is* John Goodman.
Then there's Danny McBride as Jesse. The eldest son, always trying to prove himself. Is it just me, or is Jesse eternally stuck in adolescence?
Judy, played by Edi Patterson, is pure chaos. I think she's hilarious. Honestly, she's the reason I keep watching.
And let's not forget Adam Devine as Kelvin. He's... special, to say the least. Is anyone else tired of the "dumb but devoted" character trope?
The Supporting Players: Saints or Sinners?
Walton Goggins as Baby Billy Freeman? Now *that's* inspired casting. Goggins can do no wrong. Fight me.
Jennifer Nettles as Aimee-Leigh is truly special. She is the ghost that haunts Eli. I wish we got to see her more!
The Lissons, played by Eric Roberts and Jody Hill, bring a different kind of crazy. The new investors are creepy and it makes me uneasy!
Kelvin's God Squad deserves a mention. Mostly because they're so bizarre. Is it a cult? Is it a workout group? Who knows!
Unpopular Opinions: Brace Yourselves
Ready for some hot takes? Here goes. I think Jesse is the least interesting Gemstone. There, I said it.
He is constantly whining. Someone give that man a therapy appointment and shut the door until he figures things out. I feel his pain, but I am over it.
Another one: the Baby Billy flashbacks? They're dragging on. We get it, he's shady. Move on!
Also, anyone else find Kelvin's blind devotion a little... unsettling? It's played for laughs, but underneath, it's kind of creepy.
And finally, am I the only one who thinks Eli needs to chill out? I know, he's got a past, blah blah blah. But lighten up, grandpa!
Final Thoughts: Still Watching, Though
Despite my gripes, I'm still hooked. The writing is sharp. The acting is top-notch (mostly). And the sheer absurdity of it all is just too entertaining.
The Righteous Gemstones knows exactly what it is. It's not trying to be high art. It's trying to make you laugh. And it usually succeeds.
So, yeah, the cast is great. Even if I have some "unpopular" opinions. What are yours?
And maybe, just maybe, we all need a little more Judy in our lives. Just not *too* much. That could get dangerous.
