Okay, so here's a confession. I have an *unpopular* opinion. It involves a certain blue blob. Yep, we're talking about That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Or, as I affectionately call it, "Slime Time!"
The Isekai Overload
Isekai is EVERYWHERE, right? Truck-kun is working overtime sending folks to fantasy worlds. Some are great. Some… not so much. Honestly, I was skeptical about another one. Especially one where the hero is, well, slime.
But then I started reading. And suddenly, my free time was gone. Blame Rimuru. Blame the Great Sage. Blame the adorable monsters. I was hooked.
Slime? Seriously?
A slime? That was my first thought. Couldn’t they have picked a dragon? A cool elf? Even a goblin would've been more exciting! But no, *slime*. I had some serious doubts.
However, the more I read, the more I saw the genius of it. A slime can be anything! A blank slate. A walking (or, well, *sliming*) metaphor for change. Clever, writers. Clever.
Plus, let’s be real, Rimuru Tempest is a total badass. Even if he IS blue and jiggly.
My Confession
Here it comes. Deep breath. I... kind of prefer the slower pace of the early arcs. Yeah, I said it!
Don’t get me wrong, the big battles are awesome. Watching Rimuru power up is amazing. But there was something so charming about building Tempest from the ground up. Helping goblins. Making potions. Negotiating with lizardmen.
The simple life of a slime overlord. Who knew? I feel like this is what makes the series stand out from so many other isekai titles.
The Power of Friendship (and Monster Allies)
Another thing I love is the emphasis on building a community. Rimuru isn't just strong. He's a leader. He cares about his people. And they care about him.
The friendships he makes along the way are genuinely heartwarming. From the loyal goblins to the powerful ogres, everyone has a role to play. It's a found-family trope done right.
And who wouldn't want to live in Tempest? Free food, safety, and a ridiculously overpowered slime protecting you? Sign me up!
My "Controversial" Take
So, back to my unpopular opinion. I miss the days when Rimuru was just trying to figure out how to eat herbs properly. I long for the simple things.
I love the political intrigue and world-building of the later arcs, I really do. But sometimes I just want to see Rimuru goofing off with his friends. A little slice-of-slime-life, if you will.
Maybe it's because I'm getting old. Maybe I just crave simpler stories. Or maybe, just maybe, the best part of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime was the journey, not the destination.
I know, I know. Blasphemy!
But hey, that's just my slime-tinged opinion. And I'm sticking to it. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to re-read volume 1. For research purposes, of course.
Anyone else feel the same way? Let me know! (But be nice, I'm just a simple slime fan at heart.)
