Okay, let's talk What We Do in the Shadows. Specifically, "The Trial" episode. It's a fan favorite, right?
I'm about to say something a little controversial. Prepare yourselves.
Is "The Trial" *Really* That Good?
Don't get me wrong. It's funny. The cameos are amazing. But is it the *best* episode? I'm not so sure.
Hear me out. Sometimes, I feel like the guest stars overshadow the core cast. It's a bit like going to a gig and everyone's just waiting for the famous guest guitarist.
Sure, seeing Wesley Snipes as himself (or a version of himself) is hilarious. And Tilda Swinton! Iconic.
But I think the real magic of What We Do in the Shadows lies in the everyday ridiculousness of Nandor, Nadja, Laszlo, Colin Robinson, and, of course, our beloved Guillermo.
The Cameos: A Double-Edged Sword
The vampire council is great. It is a who's who of vampire cinema royalty. But does the celebrity power distract from the usual charm?
I think it can. It feels almost like they packed too much in.
It’s like when you order a pizza and they add all the toppings you like. It ends up a soggy, overwhelming mess.
The episode is still enjoyable. I wouldn't skip it on a re-watch. But I feel it leans too heavily into the celebrity factor.
It's not quite the grounded (as grounded as vampire sitcoms can be) humor that I initially fell in love with.
The Regulars Steal the Show (Even When They Don't)
The beauty of the show is how the main characters interact. Their dynamic is what makes it so special.
Even in an episode jam-packed with stars, they still manage to shine. Guillermo's quiet desperation is always gold. Laszlo's pronouncements are always funny.
And Nandor's unwavering devotion to Guillermo, even when he doesn't quite understand it, is the heart of the show.
I appreciate the cameo from Evan Rachel Wood as Queen Sophie-Anne, she is pretty great. It just feels a bit… much.
My Unpopular Verdict
So, here it is: "The Trial" is a good episode. But it isn't the *best*.
It sacrifices some of the show's core charm for star power. And honestly I prefer those episodes that aren't heavily cameo based.
Give me an episode focusing on the mundane struggles of being a vampire in Staten Island any day. Let's see some more bat-related mishaps.
I will take a simple, beautifully constructed story like "The Curse", "Brain Scramblies", "On The Run" over it any day.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm just a vampire sitcom purist. But I had to get that off my chest.
What do you think? Am I crazy? Let me know in the comments!
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go re-watch "Brain Scramblies."
"Gizmo!"
