Blockbusters Galore! (Maybe?)
Summer 2022 was promising a ton of big-budget flicks. Think explosions. Think CGI. Think… overpriced popcorn. Are you excited?
The Superhero Situation
Of course, we had our usual superhero offerings. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness kicked things off. Did it live up to the hype? Meh. Thor: Love and Thunder brought back Natalie Portman wielding Mjolnir.
Taika Waititi directed. I have an unpopular opinion: I think his humor is sometimes... too much. Less jokes, more epic battles, please!
Dinos, Pilots, and Elvis! Oh My!
Dinosaurs roared back in Jurassic World Dominion. Did we really need another one? Probably not. But I secretly enjoyed the nostalgia.
Tom Cruise returned in Top Gun: Maverick. Okay, even *I* have to admit, that was pretty cool. Who doesn't love a bit of high-flying, jet-fueled action?
And then there's Baz Luhrmann's Elvis biopic. All that hip-shaking and sequin?! Honestly, I'm not sure if it's historically accurate, but it's definitely entertaining!
Animated Adventures
Kids (and kids at heart) had some options too! Lightyear was supposed to tell Buzz's origin story. Did anyone else find it a little... unnecessary?
Then came Minions: The Rise of Gru. Yellow mayhem, gibberish language, and general silliness. It's perfect for a hot afternoon escape.
The "Smaller" Stuff (Which is Sometimes Better!)
Not everything needs to be a massive franchise. Some smaller films sneaked in. And some were surprisingly good!
A good horror movie is always good. Did anyone watch The Black Phone?

Ready for some controversial statements? Here we go!
I think superhero movies are getting a little stale. I said it! They need to try something new. More quirky and more independent superhero movies, please!
Also, reboots and remakes are rarely as good as the originals. Fight me! Give us something truly fresh and original, Hollywood!
"Why can't we get some rom-coms?"
And finally... Why can't we get some good old-fashioned rom-coms? I miss the days of meet-cutes and grand gestures!
So, Was Summer 2022 a Success?
Overall, Summer 2022 had a mix of hits and misses. Some movies soared, while others... well, they flopped. But hey, that's show business!
Did it get you to the movie theatre? That's all that matters.
