Okay, let's talk Regular Show. We all love Mordecai and Rigby. But what year is it really set in?
The Obvious Answers (and Why They're Wrong)
Some folks scream "the 2010s!" It makes sense. It premiered in 2010, after all. But I'm not convinced.
Then there's the "timeless" argument. It's a cartoon! It doesn't need a date. That's boring, though. Let's have some fun!
My Unpopular Opinion: Late 90s/Early 2000s
I'm throwing it out there. I think Regular Show secretly pines for the late 90s, early 2000s. Hear me out!
The music is a huge clue. Think about those epic montages. Queen, Journey – total classics! They’re not exactly topping the charts in 2015.
Those bands scream retro love. My inner teenager approves deeply.
Arcade games are another big hint. Sure, arcades still exist. But are they as central to teen life in the 2010s? I think not!
Remember those glorious arcade scenes? Pure nostalgia bait, if you ask me.
The technology is…sketchy. They have cell phones. But they also use pagers sometimes! That is so 90's.
Their tech is a mishmash of old and new. It is delightfully confusing and very like my childhood home.
Cars, fashion... it's a vibe! Take a look at the cars. They're not exactly the newest models are they.
Also, remember the fashion choices? They're not always trendy or from the future.
Think about the overall atmosphere. It's carefree. It's about hanging out with friends. It’s about minimum wage shenanigans.
Doesn't that sound like the late 90s and early 2000s to you? The slower, simpler times before everything was online.
Okay, Okay, What About the Internet?
Yes, they use the internet. But it's not the internet we know today. It's clunkier. It's less all-consuming.
Their internet is like my grandparent's internet. Lots of dial-up sounds, and waiting for pictures to load.
It's more of a tool than a lifestyle. You know? You remember. We all do!
Conclusion: My Case is Solid (Probably)
So, there you have it. My totally valid, totally not-up-for-debate opinion.
Regular Show is secretly set in the late 90s/early 2000s. Or at least, that's where its heart lies.
Don't @ me. Just rewatch the show and tell me I'm wrong. You can try. I'm willing to argue about this for hours. Let's bring back those memories!
This is your opinion, don't you forget it.
Do you agree?
Let me know!
