Ever wondered what vampires do all day? Forget the sparkly, brooding types. Think more along the lines of bumbling roommates arguing over chores and struggling with basic technology.
That's the world of What We Do in the Shadows, a hilarious mockumentary following the lives of four vampire housemates on Staten Island.
A Very Special Household
Our main crew consists of Nandor the Relentless, a self-proclaimed warrior who isn't quite as intimidating as he thinks. Then there's Nadja, a passionate and fiery Romani vampire always looking for her reincarnated lover.
We also have Laszlo, Nadja's husband, a rakish vampire with a penchant for topiary art. And, of course, Colin Robinson, an energy vampire who feeds on boredom, making him the most terrifying of them all.
Adding to the chaos is Guillermo, Nandor's long-suffering familiar. He dreams of becoming a vampire himself, but mostly ends up cleaning up messes and staking rogue vampires.
Everyday Vampire Problems
These vampires face problems we can all relate to, just with a spooky twist. Who hasn't struggled with setting up a new TV? Or argued about whose turn it is to do the dishes?
Except, in their case, the TV is a plasma screen that keeps getting destroyed by garlic and the dishes are covered in… well, let's just say things get messy.
They try to navigate the modern world, with varying degrees of success. Online shopping is a challenge when you can't see your reflection. Hypnosis only works until someone accidentally Googles something on their phone.
Surprising Humanity
Despite their fangs and thirst for blood, the vampires of What We Do in the Shadows are surprisingly relatable. They care about each other, in their own strange way.
There are moments of genuine affection, even between Nadja and Laszlo, whose marriage is centuries old and gloriously dysfunctional. Nandor's attachment to Guillermo, despite consistently overlooking him, is also surprisingly sweet.
Even Colin Robinson, the energy vampire, has his moments. He may drain the life out of everyone around him, but he also provides a necessary, albeit annoying, service.
A World of Hilarious Guest Stars
The show is also packed with amazing guest appearances from other famous faces playing, or parodying, themselves. Expect to see cameos from other vampires such as Tilda Swinton and Paul Reubens (aka Pee-wee Herman).
Each episode brings a new wave of silliness, with everything from vampire orgies gone wrong to neighborhood disputes over garden gnomes. Nothing is off-limits.
Why You Should Watch
What We Do in the Shadows is more than just a vampire comedy. It's a show about friendship, family, and the absurdity of life, even when you're immortal.
It reminds us that even the most monstrous creatures can be just as flawed and hilarious as the rest of us. Plus, it's a guaranteed laugh riot from start to finish.
So, ditch the sparkly vampires and embrace the awkward, hilarious, and surprisingly heartwarming world of the Staten Island vampires. You won't regret it.
