Okay, let's talk about *Grey's Anatomy*. Fifteen seasons (and counting!), that's a lot of drama. A lot of tears. And a whole heap of questionable medical decisions.
Who Lives? Apparently Not Your Favorites.
Seriously, does Shonda Rhimes have a dartboard with character names on it? And is she just blindly throwing darts after a season or two?
It feels that way sometimes, doesn't it? We get invested, we love them, and BAM! Bus. Plane crash. Brain tumor. It's exhausting.
The Great Purge of Seattle Grace (Mercy West Whatever).
Remember when George O'Malley got hit by that bus? I'm still not over it. He was the heart of the show in the early days!
Then there's Lexie Grey. Sweet, quirky Lexie. Gone too soon in that horrific plane crash. At least Mark Sloan got to die dramatically uttering his final words to Lexie.
And don't even get me STARTED on Derek Shepherd. McDreamy, tragically hit by a truck because Addison Shephard (Montgomery) wasn't McDreamy's soulmate. Unforgivable!
Who Dies? Usually The Characters We Actually Like.
Okay, controversial opinion time. Some characters are… let's say, less compelling. Yet, they stick around forever.
Meanwhile, the interesting ones? Poof! Vanished. Killed off. Sent to run a practice in Switzerland. (Is anyone actually running a practice in Switzerland?)
It's like the writers are actively trying to make us miserable. Success!.
The "Surprise" Deaths That Weren't.
Let's be honest, sometimes you can see it coming. The character starts acting *extra* nice. They have a heartfelt moment with everyone.
They finally get their act together! Red flag! Big red flag! Time to update your character death pool.
It's like a twisted version of Chekhov's Gun. If a character gets a happy ending, they’re doomed.
Who Tells Your Story? The Survivors (And Maybe Teddy?).
The show must go on, right? So the survivors pick up the pieces. They grieve (briefly, because there's always another trauma patient rolling in).
And they tell the story. Or, at least, their version of it. Which is probably highly sanitized and conveniently forgets all the terrible things they did.
I'm looking at you, Meredith Grey. Queen of Voiceover and Master of Conveniently Ignoring Her Own Flaws.
The Never-Ending Cycle of Trauma.
Honestly, I'm surprised Seattle hasn't been declared a disaster zone. It's either raining, or a natural (or man-made) disaster is looming.
These doctors have seen more death and destruction than most war veterans. It’s a miracle they can even hold a scalpel without having a panic attack.
And yet, they keep showing up for work. Gotta admire their dedication (or their Stockholm Syndrome).
So, who lives, who dies, who tells your story on Grey's Anatomy? Probably someone you mildly dislike, after they've dramatically kissed someone they shouldn't have, whilst battling a rogue tornado.
