You Always Do Too Much In Spanish

You Always Do Too Much In Spanish

Okay, let’s talk about something. It's about that feeling you get when learning Spanish. You know, that little voice that whispers, "You’re trying too hard."

The Over-Achiever in Spanish Class

Anyone else feel like they're constantly doing extra? Like you're always saying more than necessary? I swear, I can't just say "Hola."

It has to be "¡Hola! ¿Qué tal? ¿Cómo estás? ¡Mucho gusto en verte!" Relax, me!

The Problem with Politeness

Spanish culture values politeness. We all know this. But sometimes, I think I'm overdoing it.

Need to buy bread? Prepare for a three-minute conversation about my health, the weather, and the current political climate. And all this before I even ask, "¿Me da una barra de pan, por favor?"

The Curse of Conjunctions

Conjunctions are connectors. They make your sentences smoother and more sophisticated, right? I am not so sure.

I end up using five conjunctions in one sentence. This makes my sentences a complete disaster. "Y... pero... aunque... o... entonces…" Help!

Verbosity: A Personal Struggle

Conciseness is a virtue. I try to remember this in Spanish, I really do.

But instead of saying "I'm tired," I launch into a detailed explanation of my entire day. "Estoy cansado porque me desperté temprano y fui al trabajo y luego fui al gimnasio y después tuve que hacer la compra…" You get the picture.

Someone asks a simple question. I respond with a novella.

The Adjective Avalanche

Adjectives are fun! They add color and detail. But are they always necessary?

I once described a simple cup of coffee as "caliente, aromático, delicioso, rico y espumoso." It was just coffee!

The "Perfect" Pronunciation Predicament

Pronunciation is important. Absolutely! But sometimes, I get so focused on nailing the perfect Spanish "r" that I forget what I was even saying.

I spend five minutes trying to roll the "r" in "perro." By then, the dog has run away!

The Unnecessary Subjunctive

The subjunctive mood. Oh, the subjunctive! It’s like the Mount Everest of Spanish grammar. I always feel obligated to use it. Even when it's not entirely necessary.

Just because there might be a possibility, I’m throwing in a "que yo vaya" somewhere. Even if I'm pretty sure I'm going. It's like I'm trying to impress the Spanish gods of grammar.

Maybe it's a good thing, trying too hard in Spanish. At least it shows effort, right?

Maybe. But sometimes, I just want to order a coffee without writing a sonnet about it. Is that too much to ask?

Anyone else feel my pain? Let's start a support group: Over-Achievers Anonymous (Spanish Edition).

Let's all just agree to dial it back a notch. Un poquito. And maybe, just maybe, we'll finally feel like we're speaking, not performing, Spanish. Wish me luck!
