You And I Can't Do This Manga

Okay, let's talk manga! Specifically, let's talk about manga skills. You know, that amazing stuff you see in your favorite series?

We're not talking about just enjoying them. We're talking about actually doing them.

Drawing Like a Pro...Almost

Ever looked at Kentaro Miura's art in Berserk and thought, "Yeah, I could totally do that"? Maybe after a lot of practice... and maybe with the help of a few ancient gods.

I've tried. I really have. The result? Let's just say my horses look more like mutated potatoes with legs. Guts would not be impressed.

And the intricate details? The shading? Forget about it! I can barely manage to draw a stick figure that resembles a human, let alone a battle-hardened warrior with a sword bigger than my apartment.

Panel Layout Pandemonium

Manga panels aren't just random squares thrown on a page. They're carefully crafted visual narratives! The way the action flows, the speech bubbles are placed... it's an art form in itself.

My attempts at panel layout usually result in a confusing mess where characters seem to be talking to the back of each other's heads. Or worse, the panels run off the page entirely! A disaster, frankly.

Think of Takehiko Inoue's Vagabond. The panels flow like a river. My panels? More like a stagnant swamp.

Storytelling Superpowers (Not!)

Creating a compelling manga story is like juggling flaming chainsaws while riding a unicycle. It's hard. Really, really hard.

You need interesting characters, a plot that keeps people hooked, and dialogue that doesn't make them cringe. My characters tend to be cardboard cutouts and my plots usually involve lost keys and questionable fashion choices.

Hiromu Arakawa created Fullmetal Alchemist, a sprawling epic with complex themes and unforgettable characters. I create... well, let's just say my magnum opus involves a sentient toaster oven.

The Art of the Emotion

Manga characters express emotions in ways that are both exaggerated and deeply relatable. A single panel can convey joy, sorrow, rage, or utter bewilderment.

My attempts at drawing emotional expressions usually end up looking like someone accidentally stepped on a potato. There's a certain...flattened quality to the despair.

Have you seen the sheer range of emotions in Naoko Takeuchi's Sailor Moon? It's beautiful! My characters mostly look mildly surprised, even when their planet is about to explode.

Accepting Our Limitations (And Laughing About Them)

So, yeah, maybe you and I aren't destined to become manga superstars. Maybe our art skills are closer to "enthusiastic amateur" than "prodigious talent."

And that's okay! We can still appreciate the amazing work of the artists we admire. We can still enjoy reading and immersing ourselves in the fantastic worlds they create.

Ultimately, manga is about enjoying the story and the art, not necessarily creating it ourselves. Though, if you do manage to draw a horse that doesn't look like a mutated potato, let me know your secret!
