Okay, let's talk Eva Mendes. Specifically, Eva Mendes in Once Upon a Time in Mexico. It's time we have a chat about this movie.
Don't get me wrong, I adore her. She's gorgeous, funny, and a great actress. But...
Was She Really Needed?
Here's my potentially controversial take: Carolina, her character, felt... somewhat unnecessary. I know, I know, fight me!
The movie already had so much going on. Johnny Depp as the delightfully unhinged Sands? Check. Antonio Banderas as the iconic El Mariachi? Double-check!
The plot was already a beautiful mess of revenge and political intrigue. Did we really need another layer with a love triangle?
Maybe not, but Eva Mendes looked fantastic while it was all happening.
She's Great, But...
Okay, I'm not saying she was bad. Eva Mendes is never truly "bad." She brought her signature smoldering energy to the role.
It's just, the film felt a little crowded. So many characters, so little screen time to truly develop them all.
Carolina felt like she was squeezed in between explosions and guitar solos. A lovely garnish, perhaps, but not essential to the main course.
And honestly, her relationship with El Mariachi felt a little forced. It was hard to buy into their whirlwind romance amidst all the chaos.
An Unpopular Opinion?
Perhaps I'm alone in this thinking. Maybe everyone else thought she added the perfect touch of intrigue and romance.
But to me, Once Upon a Time in Mexico would have been just as enjoyable, possibly even more so, without Carolina.
It might have allowed the other characters to breathe a little more. Imagine more screen time for Mickey Rourke's evil character!
Or more of Willem Dafoe being generally menacing. Delicious.
It's All About Balance
Look, I appreciate a good romantic subplot. But sometimes, less is more.
In a movie already bursting at the seams with action and plot twists, adding another romantic element felt like overkill.
I get the feeling Robert Rodriguez wanted to give El Mariachi a love interest. He did have her killed in the previous movie.
Maybe, just maybe, focusing on the core conflict would have made for a tighter, more impactful film.
But hey, that's just my opinion. And we all know what they say about opinions. They're like...well, you know.
So, tell me, am I crazy? Did you love Eva Mendes in Once Upon a Time in Mexico? Or do you secretly agree with my unpopular opinion?
"I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right." - Someone who probably loves Carolina in the movie.
Let's discuss! And maybe rewatch the movie. Just to be sure, of course.
For science. And because Johnny Depp with those sunglasses is forever iconic.
